Delaware, Maine, Albany & Taber — Choose the Right BOSS Denim

By Chris O'Dea | Updated May 2026 | 7 min read

1 | The BOSS Jeans Decision

BOSS denim sits in a deliberate middle ground — cleaner than streetwear, sharper than casual workwear, more wearable than tailoring. If you're choosing your first pair, or replacing a favourite, the question is rarely the brand. It's the silhouette, the fabric and the wash.

This guide explains what BOSS means by Delaware, Maine, Albany and Taber, how the comfort-stretch denim wears in, and how to choose the right pair for your build and use case. It is the BOSS jeans companion to the main brand story.

If you're new to the brand — heritage, the BOSS Black vs BOSS Green sub-brand structure, sustainability commitments — that's covered in the main Hugo Boss brand guide. This page is the denim companion: what we stock, how it fits, and how to buy it.

2 | Delaware vs Maine vs Albany vs Taber

BOSS denim uses named silhouettes that stay broadly consistent season to season. The shape names are how BOSS tells customers what they're buying — slim, regular, relaxed, tapered.

Delaware — Slim Fit

The longest-running BOSS slim jean. Close through the thigh and knee, cleanly tapered to a moderate leg opening, sitting just under the waist. Works under tailoring or with a knit and trainers. The "H-Delaware" prefix denotes the current generation cut; "P-Delaware5" is the lighter, often more washed 5-pocket variant in the same slim family.

Maine — Regular Fit

Straighter leg, more room through the thigh and seat than Delaware. Sits at the natural waist. The standard "I wear regular-fit jeans" cut — broadly suits most builds without sitting tight anywhere.

Albany — Relaxed Fit

Fuller through the leg than Maine, with more room at the hip and thigh. Sits at the natural waist. For builds where a slim or regular cut feels restrictive, or where the personal preference is a more open silhouette.

Taber — Tapered Fit

Slightly higher rise, more pronounced taper from thigh to ankle. Closer than Maine through the lower leg, looser than Delaware through the top. Modern silhouette — pairs well with trainers or boots.

What we stock most of. The Delaware silhouette is the cut OD's customers settle on once they've tried the others — close enough to feel sharp, loose enough to wear daily. Most of the BOSS denim we hold on the rail is Delaware in its current generations (H-Delaware and P-Delaware5).

3 | What We Stock in BOSS Jeans

The BOSS denim range at OD's is built around BOSS Black — the brand's clean, refined sub-line. We stock the Delaware silhouette across multiple washes and a small selection of supporting cuts.

H-Delaware Indigo & Navy

The core BOSS denim wash. Clean, dark indigo through to deep navy. Slim through the thigh and tapered to a moderate leg opening. Works under tailoring, a knit, or a casual jacket. Comfort-stretch denim — typically around 92% cotton with elastomultiester and elastane for shape recovery.

H-Delaware Black

The black-wash version of the same Delaware slim cut. Sharper under a black or charcoal knit; reads more formal than the indigo. Same comfort-stretch construction.

P-Delaware5 — Lighter Washes

The 5-pocket Delaware variant in lighter washes — light indigo, beige, washed grey. Same slim silhouette family, softer hand-feel, typically a marginally lower price point. Pairs well with a knit and trainers for weekend wear.

Sizing Range

Stocked across the standard BOSS waist range. Sizes step up in inch increments. Live in-store stock and waist availability rotate season to season — the /collections/mens-boss-black-jeans page reflects what's available today.

4 | BOSS Jeans Fit & Sizing

BOSS denim sizing uses standard inch labelling (waist × leg). The Delaware silhouette runs true to the labelled waist — it does not run small or large. The slim cut means if you are between sizes, size up; the stretch fabric gives at the seat and thigh, but it cannot replace a half-inch of fabric.

How to measure

  1. Waist: Tape around your natural waist (typically 1-2 inches above the navel). Don't suck in.
  2. Hip: Tape around the fullest point of your hip. Important on slim cuts — a tight hip will pull on the seat.
  3. Inside leg: From the inside top of the thigh straight down to where you want the hem to finish. Standard BOSS inside leg runs around 32-34 inches depending on size.

Picking the right BOSS jean

  • If you currently wear a slim-fit jean and like it — Delaware (H-Delaware or P-Delaware5) is the closest match.
  • If you find slim-fit too close through the thigh — try Maine (regular) before Delaware. Albany if Maine still feels tight.
  • If you want a modern tapered shape with a slightly higher rise — Taber.
  • Between sizes — size up. The stretch denim handles a small amount of looseness much better than tightness.

6 | Frequently Asked Questions

Is Delaware the same as a skinny jean?

No. Delaware is slim, not skinny. It tapers through the leg but leaves room through the thigh and seat. BOSS Black does not really make a true skinny jean — Delaware is as close-fitting as the line goes.

Will BOSS Delaware jeans stretch out over time?

The comfort-stretch fabric is designed to recover its shape after wear — that is the purpose of the small percentage of elastane and elastomultiester. There is give within the day at the knee and seat, but they return to shape after a wash. They do not bag out the way 100% rigid denim does.

What is the difference between H-Delaware and P-Delaware5?

Both are slim fit. H-Delaware is the standard 5-pocket Delaware in the current generation cut. P-Delaware5 is the lighter, often more washed variant in the same slim silhouette — usually slightly softer hand-feel and a marginally lower price point. The fit family is the same.

Are BOSS jeans pre-shrunk?

Yes — BOSS denim is pre-shrunk before sale. Wash cold and line dry where possible to keep the shape and colour true. Full denim care routine is in the Clothing Care Guide.

How do I get the right BOSS jeans waist size?

BOSS waist sizes are labelled in inches and run true. If between sizes, size up — the stretch denim gives at the seat and thigh but cannot replace half an inch of fabric. Call 01744 730985 for a live measurement off stock before you order online.

Can I try BOSS jeans on at OD's before buying?

Yes — we hold most of the BOSS denim range on the shop floor at 44 Barrow Street, St Helens. Try on the silhouette before committing. If a specific waist or wash is not on the rail, we can usually pull from the warehouse within 24-48 hours. Call 01744 730985 to confirm what is in.

Does BOSS use sustainable cotton in their jeans?

Selected BOSS denim lines carry a regenerative-cotton claim — raw materials sourced from farms that prioritise soil health, biodiversity and water quality. We surface this on the PDP where the specific line carries the certified claim. Not every BOSS jean is built this way; the badge is line-specific.
