Which Salomon Shoe Should I Buy?

Speedcross, XT-6, XA PRO, Ultra Glide & More — The Complete Guide

By OD's Designer Clothing | Updated April 2026 | 10 min read

Salomon was born in 1947 in the French Alps. Nearly eight decades later, the brand that invented modern ski bindings now produces some of the most technically advanced trail running, hiking, and multisport shoes on the planet. From the mud-eating Speedcross to the fashion-adopted XT-6, there is a Salomon shoe for every surface, every pace, and every purpose.

As authorised UK stockists, we carry Salomon footwear and apparel year-round at our store on Barrow Street in St Helens. This guide is built from product knowledge gained handling these shoes daily. If you are standing in front of our Salomon wall wondering which pair to pick, this is the page you need.

1 | The Four Salomon Icons: Speedcross, XT-6, XA PRO & X Ultra

Every Salomon collection is anchored by four silhouettes that have defined trail footwear for over two decades. Each started as a purpose-built tool. Each evolved into a cultural icon. Understanding these four shoes is the fastest way to find your perfect Salomon.

Speedcross

Launched: 2006
Sold: 10 million+ pairs by 2015
Built for: Mud, soft terrain, aggressive trail
Signature: Chevron lugs inspired by motocross tyre tread. The deepest, most aggressive grip Salomon makes. If you run in mud, this is the shoe.

XT-6

Launched: 2013 (S/LAB), 2018 (Sportstyle reissue)
Designer: Benjamin Grenet
Built for: Originally ultra-trail; now fashion crossover
Signature: sensiFIT cradle, dual-density EVA, agileCHASSIS. Palace, Kith, and Atmos collaborations made it a streetwear icon.

XA PRO 3D

Launched: 2002
Created by: Fred Cretinon
Built for: Multisport — trail, hiking, walking
Signature: Best-selling high-performance multisport shoe in the world. 3D Chassis for mid-foot stability plus forefoot agility. GORE-TEX and mid-cut versions available.

X Ultra

Launched: 2012
Sold: 10 million+ pairs since 2018
Built for: Hiking — day walks to multi-day backpacking
Signature: advancedCHASSIS technology developed by studying biomechanics of traversing uneven Alpine terrain. Ankle injury prevention built into the platform.

2 | Best Salomon for Trail Running: XA PRO 3D V9 GTX

Men's Salomon XA PRO 3D V9 GTX Spellbound Grisaille trail running shoe
Salomon XA PRO 3D V9 GTX Spellbound — Contagrip outsole, sensiFIT cradle, GORE-TEX waterproofing

The XA PRO 3D has been the world's best-selling multisport shoe since 2002 and with good reason. The V9 GTX version we carry at OD's combines three of Salomon's most important technologies in a single shoe: Contagrip for terrain-specific grip, the 3D Chassis for stability on uneven ground, and GORE-TEX waterproof membrane for year-round protection.

XA PRO 3D V9 GTX — Key Specs

  • Outsole: Contagrip — Salomon's signature rubber compound optimised for mixed terrain
  • Stability: 3D Chassis — H-shaped mid-foot and heel support with forefoot agility
  • Fit: sensiFIT cradle — wraps foot from sole to laces for a locked-in feel
  • Lacing: quickLACE one-pull system with tuck-away pocket
  • Waterproofing: GORE-TEX membrane — breathable and fully waterproof
  • Best for: Trail running, fell walking, hiking, wet conditions, mixed terrain

We carry the XA PRO 3D V9 GTX in multiple colourways from £80 (reduced) to £160. Whether you are running local trails, walking the Pennine Way, or need a waterproof shoe that handles everything from tarmac to mud, this is where most customers start.

OD's Staff Pick

The XA PRO 3D V9 GTX in Black is our most-recommended trail shoe for first-time Salomon buyers. Waterproof, stable on every surface, and built to last thousands of miles. Available at OD's from £80.

3 | Best Salomon for Road Running: Aero Glide 4

Men's Salomon Aero Glide 4 Black White Silver road running trainers
Salomon Aero Glide 4 — road-tuned cushioning from the mountain running experts

Salomon built its reputation on mountain terrain, but the Aero Glide 4 proves the brand can compete on tarmac too. This is a dedicated road running shoe that channels Salomon's biomechanical expertise into a lightweight, responsive platform for pavement miles.

The EnergyCell+ midsole delivers enhanced cushioning and energy return for efficient road running, while the outsole rubber is tuned for grip on hard, dry surfaces rather than trail conditions. If your regular route is roads and pavements but you want Salomon's quality and fit system, this is the shoe.

Aero Glide 4 — Key Details

  • Cushioning: EnergyCell+ enhanced EVA for energy return
  • Surface: Road-specific outsole compound
  • Weight: Lightweight construction for speed
  • Best for: Road running, tempo sessions, daily training on tarmac
  • Price at OD's: £145

4 | Best Salomon for Ultra Running: Ultra Glide 4

Men's Salomon Ultra Glide 4 Black Dark Gull ultra trail running trainers
Salomon Ultra Glide 4 — engineered for ultra-distance trail comfort

When your run is measured in hours rather than minutes, comfort becomes the dominant factor. The Ultra Glide 4 is Salomon's answer to ultra-distance trail running: maximum cushioning underfoot, a smooth ride profile that reduces fatigue over long distances, and Contagrip traction that stays reliable from mile one to mile fifty.

This is the shoe you choose when training for an ultra, running long fell routes, or when you simply want the most cushioned trail experience Salomon offers. We also carry the S/LAB Ultra Glide (£115) for runners who want the same DNA in a race-ready, stripped-back package.

Ultra Glide 4 — Key Details

  • Cushioning: High-stack midsole for ultra-distance comfort
  • Outsole: Contagrip for reliable trail grip across all conditions
  • Fit: Roomy forefoot for foot swell during long efforts
  • Best for: Ultra trail running, long-distance fell routes, 50K+ events
  • Price at OD's: £135 (2 colourways available)

S/LAB Ultra Glide — The Race Version

The S/LAB Ultra Glide strips weight and adds race-day precision to the Ultra Glide platform. Originally designed for Salomon's elite sponsored athletes, S/LAB products represent the absolute peak of the brand's engineering. Available at OD's for £115 (reduced from RRP).

5 | Salomon for Everyday Wear

Salomon's crossover from trail tool to streetwear staple has been one of the biggest footwear stories of the last decade. The XT-6, originally built for ultra-distance S/LAB racing in 2013, was reissued as a Sportstyle shoe in 2018. Collaborations with Palace, Kith, and Atmos followed. Today it sits alongside Nike Air Max and New Balance 550 as a genuine fashion icon.

But you do not need an XT-6 to wear Salomon off-trail. The XA PRO 3D works as a rugged everyday shoe for anyone who spends time outdoors. The Aero Blaze GRVL is a clean gravel runner that transitions easily from trail to pub. And the S/LAB Specture offers a futuristic silhouette for those who want something different.

Which Salomon for Casual Wear?

For Streetwear

The XT-6 is the fashion choice. Dozens of colourways, collab-level credibility, and a silhouette that works with everything from cargo trousers to tailored joggers. We do not currently carry the XT-6 but check back regularly.

For All-Round Use

The XA PRO 3D V9 GTX handles dog walks, weekend hikes, commuting, and rainy days. GORE-TEX keeps your feet dry. Contagrip means you never slip. From £80 at OD's.

For Gravel & Light Trail

The Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is a versatile gravel runner that crosses over to casual use. Clean design, lightweight, and comfortable for all-day wear. From £72.50 at OD's.

For Something Different

The S/LAB Specture is Salomon's performance shoe with a futuristic look. Originally built for elite athletes, now available at OD's for £100. A conversation starter.

6 | Salomon GORE-TEX Range: Which Models Are Waterproof?

Not every Salomon shoe is waterproof. GORE-TEX models carry a "GTX" suffix in the name and feature a breathable, fully waterproof membrane between the upper and your foot. In wet British conditions, this distinction matters.

Salomon GORE-TEX Models at OD's

XA PRO 3D V9 GTX

Multisport waterproof. Trail, hiking, walking. Full GORE-TEX membrane. 4 colourways at OD's from £80 to £160.

Aero Blaze 3 GRVL GTX

Gravel running waterproof. For wet-weather gravel and mixed surface running. £145 at OD's.

When to Choose GTX

  • Year-round UK running/hiking: Yes. British weather is unpredictable. GTX keeps your feet dry without overheating
  • Summer trail racing: Not always. Non-GTX models are lighter and more breathable for dry conditions
  • Commuting and daily wear: Yes. Walking to work in rain with wet socks is avoidable
  • Deep puddles and stream crossings: No. GTX is waterproof to ankle height only. Submerging the shoe lets water in from the top

Non-GTX Models at OD's

The following Salomon shoes in our range do not have GORE-TEX: Aero Glide 4, Ultra Glide 4, S/LAB Ultra Glide, S/LAB Specture, and Aero Blaze 3 GRVL (non-GTX version). These are breathable, lighter-weight options for dry conditions and racing.

7 | Salomon Trail Running for Beginners

If you have never run on trails before, choosing the right shoe makes the difference between a good first experience and a frustrating one. Trail shoes are not road shoes with extra grip. They are engineered differently: stiffer midsoles for uneven surfaces, aggressive outsole patterns for traction, and protective features to shield your feet from rocks and roots.

The Beginner's Decision Tree

Mostly Paths and Gravel?

Start with the Aero Blaze 3 GRVL (£72.50 reduced). A gravel-specific shoe that handles light trails, towpaths, and park runs on mixed surfaces. Less aggressive than a pure trail shoe, easier to transition into from road running.

Mixed Terrain and Wet Conditions?

The XA PRO 3D V9 GTX (from £80). Salomon's most versatile shoe handles everything from rocky trail to wet grass to muddy field edges. GORE-TEX keeps your feet dry on those first winter runs.

Longer Distances and Soft Ground?

The Ultra Glide 4 (£135). More cushioning underfoot for longer efforts. Designed for runners building towards ultra distances but equally comfortable for 10K trail events.

Serious Mud and Fell Running?

You want the Speedcross. Chevron lugs bite into soft ground like nothing else. We do not currently stock the Speedcross 6 but if mud is your primary surface, this is the shoe to track down.

Our Advice for First-Time Trail Runners

Start with the XA PRO 3D V9 GTX. It handles the widest range of surfaces, keeps your feet dry, and the sensiFIT cradle gives you confidence on uneven ground. Once you know which terrain you prefer, you can specialise from there. Visit us at 44 Barrow Street for a fitting.

8 | Salomon quickLACE: The One-Pull Lacing System

One of the first things people notice about Salomon shoes is the lacing system. Instead of traditional laces, most Salomon models use quickLACE: a single pull-cord that tightens the entire shoe in one motion. Pull up to tighten, push the toggle down to lock, tuck the excess into the tongue pocket. Done.

quickLACE System Facts

  • Strength: Kevlar-strength cord that outlasts traditional laces
  • Weight: Ultra-lightweight and low-profile — no bulk on the forefoot
  • Benefits: Even pressure distribution reduces hotspots, improves blood flow, and increases endurance on long efforts
  • Repairability: The system is designed to be replaceable. Spare quickLACE kits are available
  • Tuck pocket: Excess cord stores in the tongue, preventing snags on trail debris

The quickLACE system is found on every Salomon trail, hiking, and multisport shoe we stock. It integrates with the sensiFIT cradle to create an even, wrapping fit from sole to midfoot. Once you use it, going back to traditional laces feels like a downgrade.

quickLACE Care

Rinse the toggle mechanism after muddy runs to prevent grit from jamming the lock. If the cord frays or the toggle stiffens, replacement kits are inexpensive and easy to install. The system is designed for long-term maintenance, not replacement.

11 | Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Salomon shoes for running?

It depends on your surface. For trail running, the XA PRO 3D V9 GTX is the most versatile option, handling everything from mud to rock with Contagrip traction and GORE-TEX waterproofing. For road running, the Aero Glide 4 is purpose-built for tarmac with EnergyCell+ cushioning. For ultra-distance trail, the Ultra Glide 4 provides maximum comfort over long efforts. Visit OD's at 44 Barrow Street, St Helens for fitting advice.

What is the difference between Salomon Speedcross and XT-6?

The Speedcross is a pure trail running shoe with deep chevron lugs designed to bite into mud and soft ground. It launched in 2006 and has sold over 10 million pairs. The XT-6 was originally a 2013 S/LAB ultra-distance trail shoe that was reissued in 2018 as a lifestyle model. It features sensiFIT, dual-density EVA, and agileCHASSIS. Today the Speedcross is for serious trail running; the XT-6 has become a fashion icon with collaborations from Palace, Kith, and Atmos.

Are Salomon shoes good for running?

Salomon is one of the world's leading trail running brands, founded in the French Alps in 1947. Their shoes are engineered with proprietary technologies including Contagrip outsoles for terrain-specific grip, sensiFIT cradles for a locked-in fit, and EnergyCell cushioning for energy return. The XA PRO 3D is the world's best-selling multisport shoe. Salomon also produces road running shoes like the Aero Glide 4 and ultra-distance shoes like the Ultra Glide 4.

How do Salomon shoes fit UK sizing?

Salomon shoes generally run true to UK size. The brand provides a dedicated sizing chart at salomon.com for cross-brand comparison. Most models are standard width only, with no wide or narrow options available. Trail models like the XA PRO 3D have a snug midfoot fit thanks to the sensiFIT cradle, while ultra-distance models like the Ultra Glide 4 offer a roomier forefoot for foot swell. If you are between sizes, we recommend visiting our store in St Helens to try before you buy.

Can you wash Salomon shoes?

Do not machine wash Salomon shoes. Remove insoles and laces, knock off dried mud, then hand wash with lukewarm water and a soft brush. For GORE-TEX models, use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener, which can damage the waterproof membrane. Allow shoes to air dry at room temperature, never on a radiator or in direct sunlight. For the quickLACE system, rinse the toggle mechanism after muddy runs to prevent grit buildup. Proper care significantly extends the life of Contagrip rubber and midsole foam.

Is OD's an authorised Salomon stockist?

Yes. OD's Designer Clothing is an authorised UK stockist of Salomon. Every pair purchased from us is 100% authentic with full manufacturer warranty, sourced directly from official distribution channels. We carry Salomon footwear, apparel, and accessories at our store on 44 Barrow Street, St Helens, WA10 1RY, and online at odsdesignerclothing.com.
