Shirt Fits

Slim, tailored, regular, classic and relaxed -- how a shirt sits

OD's Designer Clothing · Knowledge Hubs

Fit decides how a shirt sits through the chest, waist and shoulders and whether it looks sharp or relaxed. This hub explains the main shirt fits, so you can choose one that flatters your build. Browse men's shirts (/collections/mens-shirts).

Close fits

Extra-Slim Fit

The most fitted cut, close through the body.

What defines it

An extra-slim fit is cut close through the chest, waist and sleeves for a sharp, tapered silhouette with little excess fabric.

It suits lean, slim builds. Browse men's shirts (/collections/mens-shirts).

Slim Fit

A trim cut that follows the body without gripping.

What defines it

A slim fit tapers through the waist and narrows the sleeves for a neat modern shape that still allows movement.

Balanced fits

Tailored Fit

A shaped fit between slim and regular.

What defines it

A tailored fit takes in the waist a little from a regular cut for a smart shape without the closeness of a slim fit.

Who it suits

It suits most builds wanting a smart line. Browse men's shirts (/collections/mens-shirts).

Regular Fit

A classic, comfortable everyday cut.

What defines it

A regular fit gives an even amount of room through the chest and waist for easy comfort and a timeless shape.

Who it suits

It suits the widest range of builds.

Classic Fit

A traditional, generous business cut.

What defines it

A classic fit is cut fuller through the body and sleeves for a traditional, relaxed drape that never feels tight.

Who it suits

It suits fuller builds and all-day office wear.

Close fits

Roomy fits

Relaxed Fit

An easy, roomy cut for comfort.

What defines it

A relaxed fit adds generous room through the body and sleeves for maximum comfort and an easy, casual drape.

Who it suits

It suits casual wear and layering.

Boxy Fit

A short, square cut for a modern casual look.

What defines it

A boxy fit is cut wide and short with a straight hem for a contemporary, streetwear-inspired shape worn untucked.

Who it suits

It suits fashion-led casual outfits.

Frequently asked questions

How should a shirt fit at the shoulders?

The shoulder seam should sit right at the edge of your shoulder, where the arm meets the body. If the seam drops onto your upper arm the shirt is too big, and if it pulls across the top the shirt is too small. Shoulders are the hardest part to alter, so get them right first.

What is the difference between slim and tailored fit?

A slim fit is cut close through the chest, waist and sleeves for a sharp, fitted line. A tailored fit is shaped at the waist too but leaves a little more room through the body and arms, so it looks smart without feeling tight, which suits a wider range of builds.

Should I size up for a casual shirt?

For an untucked casual shirt you can size up slightly for an easy, relaxed drape, especially in an overshirt or boxy style. For a shirt you will tuck in or wear under a jacket, stick to your true size so it stays neat through the body.
