Salomon Running Vest & Hydration Pack Guide

Vest Architecture, Sizing, Flask Care & Race Compliance

By Chris O'Dea | OD's Designer Clothing | Updated 2026

Salomon's running vest range spans four distinct product lines, each built for a different distance and discipline. This guide covers the current architecture, specifications, sizing, and flask care protocols. For broader context on Salomon's technologies and heritage, see the Salomon Brand Guide.

The Range: Four Lines, Four Jobs

Salomon structures its vest range around distance and discipline rather than price. Each line uses SensiFit harness construction and Quick Link sternum straps — a zig-zag elastic cord system that allows ribcage expansion during deep breathing while preventing bounce. The differences sit in capacity, panel construction, and intended use.

Model Capacity Weight (unit) Flasks Included Positioning
Active Skin 4 4L 195g (unisex) / 197g (women's) 2× 500ml Entry-level trail, sub-marathon
Gravel Skin 4 4L ~198g 2× 500ml Urban-trail hybrid, road-to-gravel transition
ADV Skin 5 5L (stretch mesh allows additional overflow storage) 195g (S) / 203g (M) 2× 500ml ULTRA soft flasks Marathon trail, adventures up to 60km
ADV Skin 12 12L (stretch mesh expands beyond nominal volume) 246g (M, unisex) / ~230g (women's) 2× 500ml Ultra-distance, mandatory kit events

All four lines include two 500ml soft flasks as standard. The ADV Skin 5 and ADV Skin 12 are also bladder-compatible, accepting 1.5L bladders (a 2L bladder fits tightly in both).

ADV Skin 5: The 2025 Update

The 2025 ADV Skin 5 introduced Y-SHAPE back construction — a panel geometry that stabilises weight distribution in the main compartment. Independent reviewers consistently describe the result as a vest that "disappears when worn," maintaining zero-bounce even when overloaded.

The pocket layout comprises two front stretch pockets, two top stretch pockets, one front zip pocket, one main stretch back compartment with side zip access, one back mesh pocket, and one low-back dual-access tunnel pocket. Pole carry uses multiple elastic loop positions, with Custom Quiver compatibility available separately.

One documented criticism: the ADV Skin 5 runs warm. Breathability could be improved, and the design lacks a second zipped pocket for keys or cards. The ADV Skin 5 is unisex only (XS–XL). No women's-specific version exists in this model.

Fabric composition: body 84% polyamide / 16% elastane; back body 100% polyester; back insert 86% polyester / 14% elastane; body insert 88% polyamide / 12% elastane. PFC-free construction confirmed.

ADV Skin 12: Ultra-Distance and Mandatory Kit

The ADV Skin 12 is widely used in UK fell and trail races requiring mandatory kit. Its stretch mesh pockets allow a wet waterproof jacket to be stuffed in without removing the vest — essential during UK races where kit checks occur at multiple points.

The 2025 update revised the pole attachment system, redesigned the rear pass-through pocket, reduced the bladder clip size, and relocated the bungee cords. Unlike the ADV Skin 5, the ADV Skin 12 does have a women's-specific version with contoured fit for narrower torsos.

For runners carrying mandatory kit in UK fell races — waterproof jacket with taped seams, waterproof trousers, whistle, survival blanket, emergency food — the 12L capacity is the minimum practical volume. The Bonatti Trail jacket meets standard UK waterproof race requirements and packs into its own chest pocket. Further detail on Salomon's jacket specifications appears in the Salomon GRVL Range Guide.

Gravel Skin 4 vs Active Skin 4

These two 4L vests share the same capacity and similar weight but differ in construction philosophy. The Active Skin 4 uses standard SensiFit construction and is available in both unisex and women's-specific versions — the women's version uses princess seam construction shaped to the female torso. The Gravel Skin 4 uses X-shaped anti-bounce construction and is designed for runners transitioning from road to gravel rather than pure trail use.

The Active Skin 4's women's-specific version is one of only two vests in the range with dedicated female construction (the other being the women's ADV Skin 12). The ADV Skin 5 remains unisex-only across all sizes.

Women's-Specific Engineering

Salomon designs women's products around different torso proportions and fit geometry rather than scaling down men's models. Lower-limb biomechanical differences inform footwear construction (covered in the Salomon Care, Sizing & Fit Guide), while vest design focuses on torso shape, shoulder width, and strap routing.

In the vest range, this translates to the women's Active Skin 4 (princess seam construction) and women's ADV Skin 12 (contoured narrower torso fit). Runners needing women's-specific vest construction at the 4L level should note the Active Skin 4 is the only option — the Gravel Skin 4 does not offer a women's-specific fit variant beyond its standard sizing.

Sizing

Vest sizing uses chest circumference measurement. Salomon's approximate size chart:

Size Chest Circumference
XS 33–36 inches
S 36–38 inches
M 38–41 inches
L 41–43 inches
XL 43–46 inches

These measurements should be verified against Salomon's current size chart or physical swing tags, as tolerances vary between model years. Vest sizing operates on a completely different scale to Salomon footwear sizing — shoe size has no bearing on vest fit. Model-by-model sizing guidance for Salomon footwear appears in the Salomon Care, Sizing & Fit Guide.

Soft Flask Specifications and Care

All Salomon soft flasks are manufactured by HydraPak using TPU construction (BPA-free, PVC-free). The range uses two thread sizes: 28mm (smaller flasks up to 250ml) and 42mm (500ml and above). Threads are cross-compatible within the same size. The 42mm wide opening allows fast refills at aid stations. All parts are dishwasher safe on the top rack at a maximum of approximately 60°C.

After Every Use

Empty immediately. Rinse with warm water using mild dish soap and a soft brush. Clean the cap and valve separately. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely upside-down with the cap removed.

Weekly Deep Clean (Choose One Method)

Baking soda method: 1–2 tablespoons in warm water, soak 15–20 minutes. White vinegar method: 1:1 vinegar-to-water ratio, soak 15–30 minutes. Cleaning tablet method: Bottle Bright or denture tablets per their instructions. Do not combine vinegar and baking soda in the same clean.

Mould Prevention

Always dry flasks completely before storage. Storing clean, dry flasks in a freezer between uses inhibits bacterial growth. Leave caps open for airflow during storage. Deep clean after every use involving electrolyte drinks — sugar residue accelerates mould development.

Replacement Intervals

With daily use, expect 24–36 months from a flask body and 6–12 months from a bite valve. Moderate use extends flask life to 3–5 years. Replace when persistent odour survives cleaning, visible cracks appear, mould will not clean out, the valve drips, or material turns cloudy.

Vest Care

All Salomon vests: hand wash in cold water at 30°C maximum. Do not iron, tumble dry, bleach, or dry clean. Air dry flat away from direct heat sources.

UK Context: Parkrun and Fell Race Compliance

With hundreds of parkrun events operating across the UK, many on mixed surfaces, a vest provides convenient hydration without handheld bottles. For fell and trail races with mandatory kit requirements, the ADV Skin 12 is the practical minimum — its 12L capacity accommodates the standard UK mandatory kit list (waterproof jacket with taped seams, waterproof trousers, whistle, survival blanket, emergency food) while leaving room for nutrition and hydration.

The ADV Skin 5 can carry a stripped-down kit list for races with lighter requirements but lacks the volume for full mandatory kit in winter conditions when bulkier waterproof layers are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Salomon vest is best for fell racing with mandatory kit?

The ADV Skin 12 is the practical minimum for UK fell races requiring mandatory kit. Its 12L capacity accommodates waterproof jacket with taped seams, waterproof trousers, whistle, survival blanket, and emergency food.

How do I size a Salomon running vest?

Vest sizing uses chest circumference, not shoe size. Measure around the fullest part of your chest. XS fits 33 to 36 inches, S fits 36 to 38, M fits 38 to 41, L fits 41 to 43, XL fits 43 to 46 inches.

Is there a women's specific Salomon running vest?

Yes. The women's Active Skin 4 uses princess seam construction shaped to the female torso, and the women's ADV Skin 12 has contoured narrower torso fit. The ADV Skin 5 is unisex only.

How do I clean Salomon soft flasks?

Rinse after every use with warm water and mild soap. Deep clean weekly using baking soda or white vinegar. Always dry completely before storage. Store flasks in a freezer between uses to inhibit bacterial growth.

How long do Salomon soft flasks last?

With daily use, expect 24 to 36 months from a flask body and 6 to 12 months from a bite valve. Replace when persistent odour survives cleaning, visible cracks appear, or the valve drips.
