Salomon GRVL Range Guide

Mixed-Surface Running Footwear, Foam Technology & Outsole Science

By Chris O'Dea | OD's Designer Clothing | Updated 2026

Salomon's GRVL designation identifies footwear and hydration products engineered for mixed-surface running — the ground between pure road and pure trail. This guide covers the GRVL product architecture, the foam and outsole technologies that define it, and the wider Salomon running footwear range it sits within. For broader context on the brand, see the Salomon Brand Guide.

What GRVL Means

GRVL is Salomon's designation for gravel and mixed-surface products. In footwear, it appears as a suffix (Aero Blaze 3 GRVL) and identifies models built with Gravel Contagrip outsoles — a compound that bridges Road Contagrip and All Terrain Contagrip. In hydration, the Gravel Skin 4 vest carries the same design philosophy: urban-trail hybrid construction for runners moving between surfaces rather than committing to one.

The typical UK run — pavement start, park or canal towpath, grass or mud section, pavement finish — is precisely the use case GRVL products address. This is also the surface profile of most parkrun events and the growing HYROX training circuit.

The Foam Problem: optiFOAM vs optiFOAM²

Salomon's 2025 midsole rebrand created near-identical names for fundamentally different foam chemistries. This is the single most confusing area in the current range and the most important distinction when comparing GRVL footwear against the wider lineup.

Foam Chemistry Key Models Character
EnergyCell Standard EVA XA Pro 3D V9, Speedcross 6 Firm, protective, durable. Oldest Salomon compound
optiFOAM EVA + OBC (DOW INFUSE™ Olefin Block Copolymer) Ultra Glide 4, Thundercross Medium-soft, good energy return
optiFOAM² Supercritical eTPU (beaded TPU construction) Aero Glide 4, Aero Blaze 3, Aero Blaze 3 GRVL Lightweight, responsive, bouncy
optiFOAM+ PEBA + EVA blend S/LAB Phantasm, S/LAB Ultra Glide Very soft, super responsive. Premium S/LAB compound

The critical distinction: optiFOAM (Ultra Glide 4) and optiFOAM² (Aero Glide 4, Aero Blaze 3 GRVL) are fundamentally different foams despite near-identical branding. One is EVA-based, the other is supercritical TPU — a beaded foam construction comparable in concept to Adidas Boost. No evidence exists that Salomon uses different foam compounds between men's and women's versions of the same model. Same chemistry, different last shape.

Contagrip Outsole Variants

Salomon uses multiple distinct Contagrip formulations. Three are relevant to the GRVL decision:

Variant Character Lug Profile Key Models
Road Contagrip Pavement-optimised, highly abrasion-resistant Flat, wide lugs Aero Blaze 3, Aero Glide 4
Gravel Contagrip Bridges Road and All Terrain — durability plus traction on loose and paved surfaces Shallow chevron Aero Blaze 3 GRVL
All Terrain Contagrip Balanced grip and durability across all surfaces 3.5–5mm lugs XA Pro 3D V9, Ultra Glide 4, Genesis

One naming hazard: Contagrip Mud and Contagrip MD are completely different formulations with opposite characteristics. Mud is the softest and stickiest compound (Speedcross 6); MD (Mixed Durability) is the hardest and most durable. The similar names cause frequent confusion.

GRVL Footwear: Aero Blaze 3 GRVL

The Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is the core GRVL shoe. It uses optiFOAM² midsole foam, Gravel Contagrip outsole, Reverse Camber rocker geometry, SensiFit upper construction, and an OrthoLite sockliner. Men's weight is 247g (US 9), women's approximately 207g. Drop is 8mm across both. The standard (non-GRVL) Aero Blaze 3 weighs 230g men's — the GRVL is approximately 17g heavier than the standard model.

A GORE-TEX version (Aero Blaze 3 GRVL GTX) adds a waterproof membrane with PFC-free construction, a protective toe cap, and approximately 275g total weight. For year-round UK use where wet conditions are frequent, the GTX version eliminates the need for surface-dependent shoe rotation.

Road and Trail Companions

The GRVL sits between two models that define the range boundaries:

The Aero Glide 4 is the pure road option. It shares the same optiFOAM² midsole and Reverse Camber geometry as the Aero Blaze 3 GRVL but uses Road Contagrip (flat lugs, pavement-optimised). Weight is 256g men's, 226g women's. The 2024 update narrowed the upper fit compared to the Aero Glide 3 — runners familiar with the previous version should note the change.

The Ultra Glide 4 is the trail option. It uses optiFOAM (EVA + OBC — different foam entirely despite the similar name), All Terrain Contagrip with 4mm lugs, Quicklace closure, endoFit internal sleeve, and relieveSPHERE outsole geometry for pressure diffusion on ultra distances. Weight is 280g men's, 252g women's. Drop is 6mm (lower than the 8mm on the Aero range). Available in regular and wide widths.

Reverse Camber Geometry

Both the Aero Glide and Aero Blaze ranges use Reverse Camber — a heel-to-toe rocker geometry derived from Salomon's ski heritage. The rocker profile shifts the pivot point to ease propulsion and smooth transitions. This geometry is absent from the Ultra Glide and XA Pro lines, which use conventional platform designs suited to uneven terrain where rocker instability would be a disadvantage.

Jackets for Mixed-Surface Running

The Bonatti Trail jacket is Salomon's waterproof shell designed to fit over hydration packs up to 12L. It uses Pertex Shield 2.5-layer ripstop fabric (100% polyamide, Japanese Mitsui construction) delivering 20,000mm hydrostatic head and 20,000 g/m²/24h breathability. Weight is 195g. It packs into its own chest pocket. Ventilation uses a smart-vent press button on the chest and a back ventilation panel — no pit zips. This specification comfortably meets typical UK fell and trail race mandatory kit requirements (usually 10,000mm minimum) and UTMB waterproof standards.

A separate product, the standard Bonatti Waterproof jacket, uses AdvancedSkin Dry fabric at 10,000mm hydrostatic head — half the waterproofing of the Trail version. It technically meets minimum race requirements but many organisers prefer higher specifications. The SHKout Fly and Outwind jackets are wind-resistant only with no waterproof membrane and cannot replace a waterproof jacket for race kit compliance.

UK Mixed-Surface Context

The GRVL range maps directly to how most UK runners actually use their shoes. Canal towpaths, park trails, compacted gravel paths, and pavement connectors between green spaces represent the dominant running surface in British towns and cities. The Gravel Contagrip outsole handles this surface rotation without the compromise of running road rubber on loose ground or trail lugs on tarmac. For runners entering fell or trail races with mandatory kit requirements, the Salomon Running Vest & Hydration Pack Guide covers vest selection and kit compliance. Model-by-model sizing guidance appears in the Salomon Care, Sizing & Fit Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GRVL mean in Salomon shoes?

GRVL is Salomon's designation for gravel and mixed-surface products. It identifies footwear with Gravel Contagrip outsoles designed for runners who move between pavement, gravel paths, and light trail surfaces.

What is the difference between optiFOAM and optiFOAM squared?

Despite near-identical names, they are fundamentally different foams. optiFOAM is an EVA plus OBC blend found in the Ultra Glide 4. optiFOAM squared is supercritical beaded TPU found in the Aero Glide 4 and Aero Blaze 3 GRVL, comparable in concept to Adidas Boost.

Is the Aero Blaze 3 GRVL good for parkrun?

The Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is ideal for parkrun events, particularly those on mixed surfaces. Its Gravel Contagrip outsole handles the typical parkrun surface rotation of pavement, compacted gravel, and grass without compromise.

Does OD's stock the Salomon Bonatti Trail jacket?

Yes. The Bonatti Trail jacket delivers 20,000mm waterproofing at just 195g and meets UTMB mandatory kit requirements. Browse our Salomon range online or visit 44 Barrow Street, St Helens.
