Salomon Care, Sizing & Fit Guide
Salomon sizing varies model to model within the same range, and construction materials require specific care protocols to maintain performance. This guide covers footwear fit by model, women's-specific biomechanical engineering, apparel line differences, and care instructions across footwear, apparel, and GORE-TEX products. For broader context on the brand, see the Salomon Brand Guide.
Footwear Sizing: Model-by-Model Variance
Salomon does not fit uniformly across its range. Upper construction, lacing systems, and intended use all influence how a given model runs relative to its marked size. The following guidance reflects documented fit characteristics across the current lineup.
| Model | Fit Tendency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aero Glide 4 | Narrower than previous version | The 2024 upper redesign created a more structured, narrower fit than the Aero Glide 3. Runners familiar with the AG3 should note this change |
| Aero Blaze 3 GRVL | Standard | SensiFit upper with regular laces provides a secure wrap without excessive tightness |
| Ultra Glide 4 | Standard to generous | Available in regular and wide widths. endoFit internal sleeve cradles the foot. Quicklace closure |
| XA Pro 3D V9 GTX | Snug, particularly in the toe box | Form-fitting upper with Quicklace. Runners with wider feet may benefit from a half-size increase |
| Genesis | Standard | Matryx Kevlar/polyamide upper is extremely abrasion-resistant but does not stretch over time |
| Speedcross | Snug | Form-fitting upper designed for aggressive trail. Half-size increase commonly recommended to avoid toe box pressure on descents |
For GORE-TEX versions of any model, the waterproof membrane adds a thin layer inside the upper. This does not typically require sizing up, but runners on the boundary between sizes may find the GTX version marginally tighter than its non-waterproof equivalent.
Lacing Systems
Salomon uses two lacing systems across the current range, and the split does not follow an obvious pattern.
Quicklace is a single-pull Kevlar-reinforced cord with a toggle lock and an integrated lace pocket on the tongue. It appears on the Ultra Glide 4, XA Pro 3D V9, Genesis, and Speedcross. Replacement Quicklace kits are available — the cord is a consumable component that degrades with extended use, UV exposure, and repeated wet/dry cycles.
Traditional laces appear on the Aero Glide 4 and Aero Blaze 3 GRVL. The Aero Glide 4 uses a reinforced rubberised eyelet plate introduced in the 2024 update.
Women's-Specific Footwear Engineering
Salomon builds women's shoes on distinct lasts rather than scaling down men's models. Women's Q-angle (the angle between the quadriceps and the patellar tendon) is 6°–8° larger than men's due to wider pelvic geometry, producing increased knee valgus and higher foot eversion (15°–18° versus men's 9°–12°). Salomon's women's lasts account for these biomechanical differences through narrower heel cups, more contoured arches, and different instep volumes.
No evidence exists that Salomon uses different foam compounds between men's and women's versions of the same model. Same chemistry, different last shape. This is consistent across independent lab testing. Weight differences between men's and women's models reflect last geometry and upper material volume, not midsole formulation. For women's-specific vest engineering, see the Salomon Running Vest & Hydration Pack Guide.
Vest Sizing
Vest sizing uses chest circumference and operates on a completely different scale to footwear sizing. Shoe size has no bearing on vest fit. Full sizing charts, model comparison, and women's-specific vest construction are covered in the Salomon Running Vest & Hydration Pack Guide.
Apparel Fit: SHKout Core vs Sense Aero
Salomon's two current apparel lines use different fit profiles and construction methods despite sharing Knit_Flow fabric technology in their tops.
| Feature | SHKout Core | Sense Aero |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Regular | Slim / Active |
| Seam construction | Flatlock seams | Glued seams (lower bulk, smoother against skin) |
| Stretch (tees) | 2-way | 4-way |
| Shorts fabric | Recycled polyester, mechanical stretch | Aerotech with micro-perforations |
No evidence of different fabric weights between men's and women's equivalents within the same line. Differences between men's and women's versions are silhouette and construction only. The women's cropped tee is an exception — it uses 4-way stretch Knit_Flow versus the standard 2-way in other SHKout Core tops.
Footwear Care
After Every Use
Remove dirt and mud using a soft wet brush and clean water. Loosen the laces or Quicklace cord and remove the insoles. Never machine wash — this can damage bonded construction, waterproof membranes, and midsole foam. Dry at room temperature in a ventilated area. Do not use radiators, direct sunlight, or tumble dryers — external heat sources degrade EVA and TPU foam compounds and can delaminate bonded uppers.
Insole Maintenance
OrthoLite sockliners (fitted across most Salomon models) should be removed and washed separately on a regular basis using warm water and mild detergent. Sockliners are replaceable — persistent odour that survives cleaning indicates the antimicrobial treatment has degraded and the insole should be swapped.
GORE-TEX Re-Waterproofing
GORE-TEX membranes retain their waterproof barrier indefinitely, but the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating on the outer fabric degrades over time. When water stops beading on the surface and begins to soak into the outer layer (known as wetting out), re-apply DWR treatment using a spray-on product designed for GORE-TEX footwear. Clean the shoes thoroughly before application. Re-waterproofing restores the outer fabric's ability to shed water, which in turn maintains breathability — a saturated outer layer blocks moisture vapour transfer from inside.
Quicklace Maintenance
Rinse the Quicklace cord and toggle mechanism after muddy runs to prevent grit accumulation in the locking system. Inspect the cord periodically for fraying, particularly where it passes through eyelets. Replacement kits are available. Store shoes with the Quicklace loosened to reduce sustained tension on the cord.
Apparel Care
Knit_Flow fabric (SHKout and Sense Aero tops) integrates 37.5 Technology mineral-based thermoregulation and Ionic+ Botanical antimicrobial treatment. Both treatments are embedded in the fibre construction and do not wash out under normal conditions. Machine wash cold, inside out. Do not use fabric softener — it clogs the 3D knit structure that allows airflow between fabric and skin. Tumble dry on low or air dry flat.
Recycled polyester shorts and pants follow the same cold wash protocol. Zip all pockets before washing to prevent snag damage to mesh liners.
GORE-TEX Jacket Care
Close all zips before washing. Do not turn inside out — the outer face needs direct agitation to clean properly. Use a GORE-TEX-specific detergent or mild liquid detergent without fabric softener or bleach. Machine wash on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low heat after washing — the heat reactivates the DWR coating. If tumble drying is not available, apply a spray-on DWR product after air drying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Salomon shoes run true to size?
Salomon sizing varies by model. The Speedcross and XA Pro 3D V9 GTX run snug and may require a half-size increase. The Ultra Glide 4 runs standard to generous. Check our model-by-model sizing table for specific guidance.
Can I machine wash Salomon trainers?
No. Machine washing can damage bonded construction, waterproof membranes, and midsole foam. Clean with a soft wet brush and water, remove insoles, and dry at room temperature away from direct heat.
How do I re-waterproof Salomon GORE-TEX shoes?
When water stops beading on the surface, clean the shoes thoroughly and apply a spray-on DWR product designed for GORE-TEX footwear. The membrane itself remains waterproof indefinitely; it is the outer DWR coating that degrades.
What is the difference between Quicklace and traditional laces?
Quicklace is a single-pull Kevlar-reinforced cord with a toggle lock, found on models like the Ultra Glide 4 and Speedcross. Traditional laces appear on the Aero Glide 4 and Aero Blaze 3 GRVL. Quicklace cords are replaceable consumables.
