Running shoes for wide feet — On Running, Saucony, and Salomon compared

Best Running Shoes for Wide Feet

On Running, Saucony & Salomon Compared — Honest Width Guide

By OD's Designer Clothing | Updated April 2026 | 7 min read

If you have wide feet, finding running shoes that actually fit is frustrating. Most brands only make standard width, and "runs wide" is not the same as a proper wide fit. We stock On Running, Saucony, and Salomon, and we'll tell you straight: Saucony is the only brand of the three that offers dedicated wide fit sizes. But that doesn't mean the other two won't work — some models naturally accommodate wider feet better than others. Here's the honest breakdown.

1 | Which Running Shoe Brands Offer Wide Fit?

Let's get the key fact out of the way immediately.

Brand Standard (D) Wide (2E) Extra Wide (4E)
On Running Yes No No
Saucony Yes Yes Yes (select models)
Salomon Yes No No

The Bottom Line

Saucony is the only brand we stock that manufactures dedicated Wide (2E) and Extra Wide (4E) running shoes. On Running and Salomon are standard width only across their entire range. If you need a proper wide fit, Saucony is where to start.

2 | Saucony Wide Fit — The Only True Option

Saucony has offered wide fit options for decades, and it remains one of their strongest selling points. Wide (2E) and Extra Wide (4E) versions use the same midsole, outsole, and technology as standard width — the difference is purely in the upper construction and last shape, which are re-engineered to provide more room in the forefoot and midfoot without changing the shoe's performance characteristics.

Saucony Width Options Explained

  • Standard (D): The default width, fits most feet. This is what you'll find on the shelf.
  • Wide (2E): Approximately 6mm wider in the forefoot than standard. Suits people whose toes touch the sides of standard shoes.
  • Extra Wide (4E): Approximately 12mm wider than standard. For genuinely wide or swollen feet. Available in select models only.

Best Saucony Models Available in Wide

The following Saucony models from our range are available in Wide and/or Extra Wide options (subject to stock availability — ask in-store or check online for current sizes):

3 | Does On Running Come in Wide?

No. On Running does not offer wide or extra-wide sizes in any model. Their entire footwear range — road running, trail, training, and lifestyle — is standard width only.

This is one of the most common disappointments we hear from customers who love the look and technology of On shoes but find them too narrow. On's position is that their lasts are designed to fit "true to size" and accommodate "most foot shapes," but the reality is that their shoes run on the narrower side of standard, particularly in the midfoot.

On Running Fit Characteristics

  • Lifestyle models (Cloudtilt, Cloud 6): Most forgiving fit in the range — softer uppers stretch slightly
  • Road running (Cloudmonster, Cloudswift): Standard fit with structured uppers — limited stretch
  • Training (Cloud X 4, Cloudpulse 2): Reinforced uppers for lateral stability — firmer fit
  • Trail (Cloudvista 2): Narrowest fit in the range, especially through the midfoot

If you have moderately wide feet, some On models may work for you at true-to-size or half a size up. But if you need a genuine wide fit — where your toes visibly press against the sides of standard shoes — On Running will not work for you. We'd point you to Saucony instead.

4 | Does Salomon Come in Wide?

No. Salomon does not offer dedicated wide fit options in their running shoe range. Like On, their entire collection is standard width only.

Salomon's heritage is trail and outdoor footwear, where a snug, secure fit is prioritised for technical terrain. Their SensiFit and EndoFit construction systems are designed to wrap the foot closely for maximum control. This is great for grip and stability, but it means Salomon shoes generally run narrower than both On Running and Saucony in standard width.

Salomon Fit Characteristics

  • Road shoes (Aero Glide 4): Most generous fit in the range — slightly wider than trail models
  • Trail shoes (XA Pro 3D, Ultra Glide 4): SensiFit wraps tight — narrow through midfoot and heel
  • Lifestyle (S/LAB): Varies significantly by model
  • Quicklace system: Allows some pressure distribution, but doesn't add width to the shoe

If you have wide feet and want Salomon, the Aero Glide 4 is the most likely model to work in a half size up. But for a true wide fit, Saucony remains the only option from our range.

5 | Which Models Run Wider Naturally?

Even within standard-width-only brands, some shoes accommodate wider feet better than others due to their last shape, upper material, and construction method. Here's what we've observed from fitting thousands of pairs.

On Running — Wider-Running Models

Cloudmonster Void

The widest On running shoe in current stock. Generous toe box by On standards. The oversized midsole creates a wider platform. Most likely to work for moderately wide feet at true to size.

Cloudtilt

Lifestyle model with a softer, more flexible upper that stretches to accommodate wider feet. The knit construction gives more than the engineered mesh used in running models.

Salomon — Wider-Running Models

Aero Glide 4

The widest Salomon road shoe. More generous forefoot than the Ultra Glide. If you're going to try Salomon with wider feet, start here in a half size up.

Ultra Glide 4

More room than XA Pro or trail models, but still narrower than the Aero Glide. The rocker geometry helps distribute pressure across a wider area of the foot.

Saucony — Widest Models

Triumph 23

The most generous fit in Saucony's range even in standard width. Available in Wide (2E) and Extra Wide (4E), making it the widest running shoe we stock full stop.

Ride 19

Generous standard fit plus Wide (2E) option. The most versatile daily trainer for wide-footed runners. Balanced cushioning without being heavy.

6 | How to Know If You Need Wide Fit

Not everyone who thinks they have wide feet actually needs a wide shoe. Here's how to tell the difference between needing wide fit and needing the right size or shape.

Signs You Need Wide Fit (2E or 4E)

  • Your toes press against both sides of the shoe in your correct length
  • You get blisters on the sides of your big toe or little toe
  • The upper visibly bulges outward when you stand in the shoe
  • You've been told you have wide feet by a podiatrist or shoe fitter
  • You measure E or wider on a Brannock device
  • You've historically needed wide fit in other shoe brands

Signs You Might Just Need a Different Size or Shape

  • The shoe feels tight when cold but fine after 10 minutes of wear — this is normal
  • Tightness is only in the toe cap, not the midfoot — you may need a half size up
  • Tightness is only on one foot — foot asymmetry is normal, fit to the larger foot
  • You're trying a brand known for narrow lasts (On, Salomon) — try a brand with a wider standard last first

The Simple Test

Remove the insole from your shoe and stand on it. If your foot overhangs the insole on either side, the shoe is too narrow for you. If your foot sits within the insole outline with a few millimetres to spare, standard width is fine.

7 | OD's Wide Fit Recommendations

Based on fitting hundreds of customers with wider feet, here's our practical advice.

If You Definitely Need Wide Fit: Buy Saucony

There's no way around this. Saucony is the only brand we stock with dedicated wide sizes. The Ride 19 in Wide (2E) is our most recommended option for everyday running, and the Triumph 23 in Wide is the best choice for maximum cushioning. Both are available in-store and online, subject to stock.

If You Have Moderately Wide Feet: Try These First

  1. Saucony standard width — Saucony's standard width is already wider than On or Salomon standard. Try the Ride 19 or Triumph 23 in standard first.
  2. On Running Cloudmonster Void — The widest On shoe by last shape. Try at true to size. If it pinches in the midfoot, On won't work for you.
  3. Salomon Aero Glide 4 — The widest Salomon. Try half a size up. If the midfoot still feels restrictive, Salomon's SensiFit construction is too narrow for your feet.

If You Need Extra Wide (4E): Limited Options

Extra Wide is only available from Saucony and only in select models. We can order specific sizes on request, but stock varies. Contact us or visit in-store to check current availability in your size.

8 | Frequently Asked Questions

Does On Running make wide fit shoes?

No. On Running only makes standard width (D) shoes across their entire range. They do not offer Wide (2E) or Extra Wide (4E) options in any model. If you need wide fit, Saucony is the only brand we stock with dedicated wide sizes.

Does Salomon make wide fit shoes?

No. Salomon only makes standard width shoes. Their SensiFit construction is designed for a secure, snug fit, which makes them feel narrower than On Running or Saucony in standard width. Salomon is generally not recommended for wide feet.

Which Saucony shoes come in wide?

The Triumph, Guide, Ride, and Hurricane models are typically available in Wide (2E) options. Select models are also available in Extra Wide (4E). Availability varies by season and size — contact us or check in-store for current stock.

Should I size up instead of buying wide?

Sizing up adds length as well as width, which can cause your foot to slide forward and create heel slippage. If your foot is the correct length but too wide, a dedicated wide-fit shoe in your true size is always the better choice. However, if you're between sizes with moderately wide feet, going half a size up is a reasonable compromise.

Which On Running shoe is widest?

The Cloudmonster Void has the most generous fit in On's current running range, followed by the Cloudtilt for lifestyle. However, even these are standard width only and will not accommodate genuinely wide feet. If standard On shoes feel tight in the midfoot, they are not the right brand for your foot shape.
