How to Style a Belstaff Jacket

The Belstaff Heritage

Belstaff was founded in Staffordshire in 1924 by Eli Belovitch and his son-in-law Harry Grosberg. The brand made its name producing waxed cotton jackets for motorcyclists — waterproof outerwear that protected riders against British weather without the bulk and stiffness of rubber. Nearly a century later, that motorcycling DNA still defines every Belstaff jacket.

What makes Belstaff iconic is the silhouette: a four-pocket, belted waist jacket with a collar that can be turned up against wind and rain. This shape was worn by Che Guevara across South America, by Steve McQueen in his films, and by generations of British riders who needed a jacket that worked as hard as they did. The Trialmaster and Roadmaster are the most famous expressions of this shape, but the design language runs through the entire Belstaff range.

Why Belstaff Works as Fashion

Unlike brands that manufacture heritage through marketing, Belstaff earned its status through a century of function. The jacket shapes were designed for riding positions, the pockets for gloves and maps, the belts for wind resistance. These functional details — now largely decorative — give Belstaff jackets a character and depth that purely fashion-designed jackets lack. You are not wearing a facsimile of a heritage jacket. You are wearing the real thing, updated for modern fit.

Key Jacket Models

Pendulum Jacket — £358–£895

The Pendulum is Belstaff’s modern interpretation of its moto heritage. A four-pocket, zip-front jacket with a standing collar and ribbed waistband. Available in black and major brown. The black Pendulum is the most versatile Belstaff piece — it works with everything from jeans and a t-shirt to chinos and a knitted polo.

Ground Jacket — £262–£350

A lighter, more contemporary take on the Belstaff silhouette. The Ground jacket strips back some of the heritage detailing for a cleaner look that works in urban contexts. Available in black and true olive. The olive Ground is a standout piece — the colour softens the moto aesthetic and works exceptionally well with navy and cream layering.

Marsh Jacket — £375

A more relaxed, slightly oversized fit that sits between the Pendulum’s precision and a casual field jacket. The Marsh is the most comfortable Belstaff to layer over knitwear and thicker mid-layers. It works particularly well as an autumn-to-spring transitional piece.

Trail Overshirt — £395

A wool overshirt that channels Belstaff’s outdoor heritage without the moto references. The Trail sits at the intersection of shirt and jacket — structured enough to wear as an outer layer on mild days, light enough to layer under a coat when temperatures drop. The dark ink colourway is timeless.

Casual Styling

The Weekend Classic

Belstaff Pendulum in black + white crew-neck t-shirt + dark indigo jeans + leather boots. This is the default Belstaff look and it works because the jacket does all the heavy lifting. The white tee creates contrast, the dark jeans keep the silhouette clean, and the boots ground the moto heritage. No accessories needed — the jacket is the statement.

Relaxed Saturday

Ground jacket in true olive + navy BOSS sweatshirt + charcoal joggers + clean white trainers. The olive jacket softens the overall look, the navy sweatshirt adds depth to the colour palette, and the joggers keep it genuinely comfortable. This outfit works for cafes, galleries, and weekend errands where you want to look good without looking dressed up.

Country Walk

Marsh jacket + roll-neck knit from Gran Sasso + corduroy or moleskin trousers + rugged boots. The Marsh’s relaxed fit accommodates the bulk of a roll-neck knit, and the combination channels classic British countryside style. This is Belstaff at its most natural — on a country walk, at a pub, by a fire.

Smart-Casual Styling

Dinner with Character

Pendulum in black + Paul Smith knitted polo in navy + dark tailored trousers + suede Chelsea boots. The Pendulum worn open over a knitted polo creates a smart-casual look with genuine character. The moto heritage of the jacket prevents the outfit from looking too formal, while the Paul Smith knitwear adds sophistication. This combination works for restaurant dinners, bar evenings, and events where “smart casual” actually means something.

After-Work Transition

Ground jacket in black + Oxford shirt (rolled cuffs) + dark chinos + Paul Smith Drummond boots. Swap your blazer for a Belstaff when leaving the office, and the outfit shifts from corporate to interesting. The Ground jacket’s clean lines layer naturally over a shirt, and the black colourway maintains the polish that work situations require.

Layering with Knitwear

Belstaff jackets are designed to be layered. The original riders wore them over wool jumpers in cold weather, and the proportions of the modern range still accommodate mid-layers without looking bulky. This is where our Gran Sasso knitwear becomes the perfect partner.

Gran Sasso + Belstaff

Italian knitwear under British outerwear is a combination that sounds unlikely but works beautifully. Gran Sasso’s cable-knit polo shirts sit cleanly under a Belstaff collar. Their zip-up cardigans add warmth without adding bulk. The quality of Gran Sasso’s merino and cashmere-blend yarns means the knitwear layers smoothly rather than bunching, which is essential under a fitted jacket.

Recommended Combinations

  • Pendulum + Gran Sasso cable-knit polo: The collar of the polo sits inside the Belstaff collar — refined layering
  • Ground + Gran Sasso zip hoody: Casual warmth with clean lines. The hoody hood sits naturally inside the jacket collar
  • Marsh + Gran Sasso reversible jacket: Double layering for cold days — the Gran Sasso piece adds insulation and its own aesthetic
  • Trail Overshirt + Gran Sasso crew-neck: Light layering for autumn. The overshirt worn open over a fine-gauge knit

Paul Smith Underneath

Paul Smith shirts and knitwear add a layer of personality under Belstaff’s heritage exterior. A Paul Smith knitted merino polo in khaki or dark navy provides the collar detail that a Belstaff jacket frame needs. Paul Smith’s subtle pattern work — a contrasting trim, a detail on the cuff — adds interest without competing with the jacket’s own character.

Seasonal Styling

Spring / Autumn

Belstaff’s natural season. The Ground or Trail over a light knit or chambray shirt handles 10–18°C comfortably. The waxed cotton models come into their own in April showers and October drizzle. Layer up or down depending on the day. No other jacket type transitions through spring and autumn as naturally as a Belstaff.

Winter

The Pendulum over a Gran Sasso cashmere-blend knit handles winter cold to around 5°C. Below that, Belstaff’s Compound cardigan-down hybrid provides additional insulation while staying within the brand’s design language. For sub-zero conditions, Belstaff is a style layer rather than a warmth layer — consider it alongside a Parajumpers or UBR down piece for the coldest days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I style a Belstaff jacket?

Belstaff jackets work across casual and smart-casual contexts. For casual: wear over a t-shirt with jeans and boots. For smart-casual: layer over a knitted polo with chinos and Chelsea boots. For layered looks: pair with Gran Sasso knitwear or Paul Smith shirts underneath. The jacket is the statement — keep everything else clean and simple.

What knitwear works under a Belstaff jacket?

Collar detail matters. Knitted polos (Gran Sasso, Paul Smith) sit naturally inside the Belstaff collar. Roll-neck knits work under the Marsh and Pendulum. Avoid chunky cable knits that add too much bulk — fine-gauge merino and cashmere-blend layers work best. The knitwear should add warmth without changing the jacket’s silhouette.

Is Belstaff too dressy for casual wear?

No. Belstaff’s moto heritage gives it natural casual credibility. The Ground jacket in particular works with jeans and trainers. The brand sits at the intersection of heritage and casual — it looks equally at home at a pub as it does at a dinner. The key is to dress the rest of the outfit down if you want a casual look.

Can you wear a Belstaff in the rain?

Yes. Belstaff’s waxed cotton models (Trialmaster, Roadmaster) are inherently water-resistant — waxed cotton was originally developed to keep motorcyclists dry in British weather. Non-waxed models offer varying degrees of water resistance. For sustained heavy rain, the waxed cotton pieces are the most reliable.
