Ponte Roma Explained
In brief: Ponte Roma, or Ponte di Roma, is a double-knit fabric with identical smooth surfaces on both sides. The name translates as Roman bridge, referencing the interlocking stitch structure. A typical composition is 65/30/5 or 60/35/5 polyester, viscose and elastane. It weighs 250 to 350 GSM, stretches 20 to 30 percent in both directions with good recovery, and is wrinkle resistant with no edge curling.
What is Ponte Roma?
Ponte Roma, sometimes written Ponte di Roma, is a double-knit fabric with identical smooth surfaces on both sides. The name translates as Roman bridge, a reference to the interlocking stitch structure that gives the fabric its stability. A typical composition blends polyester, viscose and elastane in ratios such as 65/30/5 or 60/35/5, combining durability, a soft hand and stretch in one cloth.
Weight and stretch
Ponte sits in a useful middle ground for weight, running 250 to 350 GSM, which makes it heavier than jersey but lighter than neoprene. It stretches 20 to 30 percent in both directions and, importantly, recovers its shape well, so garments do not bag out. It is also wrinkle resistant and travel-friendly, and unlike single jersey it does not curl at the edges, which makes it easier to tailor cleanly.
What Ponte Roma is best for
The combination of structure and stretch makes Ponte ideal for pieces that need to look tailored but feel comfortable. It is a favourite for tailored trousers, blazers and structured workwear that require stretch with polish. Because it holds its shape and resists creasing, it performs especially well for travel and long days, delivering a put-together look without the stiffness of a woven suiting fabric.
