CloudTec Explained
In brief: CloudTec is On Running's patented cushioning technology, featuring hollow pod elements, or "clouds", that compress independently on landing and lock together for a firm push-off. Developed by Swiss engineers, it delivers a distinctive sensation of soft landings followed by stable, explosive take-offs, setting it apart from traditional foam midsoles.
What is CloudTec?
CloudTec is On Running's proprietary cushioning system, developed in Switzerland by co-founder Olivier Bernhard and his engineering team. The concept originated from Bernhard's experiments with sections of garden hose glued to the outsole of a running shoe, seeking a new approach to cushioning that offered both softness and responsiveness. Unlike conventional running shoes that rely on a single block of foam for cushioning, CloudTec utilises a series of individual, hollow pod elements, known as "clouds", strategically placed across the outsole. These pods are designed to compress independently upon footstrike, absorbing both vertical and horizontal impact forces. This segmented approach allows for a highly adaptive cushioning experience, where each cloud reacts precisely to the wearer's foot and the ground, before locking together to create a stable platform for push-off. This mechanism aims to deliver a "soft landing, firm push-off" sensation, a hallmark of On Running's footwear.
How CloudTec works
The core of CloudTec's functionality lies in its individual cloud elements and the embedded Speedboard plate. Each cloud pod is engineered to compress upon impact, absorbing shock in multiple directions. This compression is not merely vertical; the hollow structure allows for a degree of horizontal deformation, adapting to the specific forces of each stride. Beneath the array of cloud elements, a Speedboard, typically made from a glass-fibre reinforced polymer, acts as a propulsive plate. As the clouds compress, the Speedboard flexes, storing kinetic energy. During the transition to toe-off, the clouds lock together, providing a stable base, while the Speedboard releases its stored energy, propelling the wearer forward. This synergy between the cushioning clouds and the responsive Speedboard creates a dynamic system that transitions from a cushioned landing to a firm, energetic push-off. CloudTec systems are often paired with On's Helion superfoam for enhanced energy return or Zero-Gravity EVA for lightweight cushioning.
CloudTec Phase: the next evolution
CloudTec Phase represents an evolution of the classic CloudTec system, engineered for an even smoother and more seamless ride. While traditional CloudTec pods compress and lock, CloudTec Phase introduces a sequential collapse mechanism. The cloud elements are designed to collapse in a "dominoes" effect, one after another, as the foot rolls through its stride. This sequential deformation creates a fluid, rolling sensation, enhancing the smoothness of transitions from landing to push-off. Models like the Cloudsurfer were among the first to feature CloudTec Phase, offering a perceptibly different feel compared to classic CloudTec. This innovation aims to further refine the cushioning experience, making each step feel more natural and effortless, particularly for daily road running.

Is CloudTec good for walking?
Yes, CloudTec is well-suited for walking and general daily wear, a key reason for On Running's crossover appeal beyond performance running. The "soft landing, firm push-off" principle, while designed for running, translates effectively to walking, standing, and everyday activities. The individual cloud elements provide adaptive cushioning that responds to each step, offering comfort for extended periods. On's lifestyle series, such as the popular Cloud 5, are specifically designed with everyday use in mind, balancing cushioning with a lightweight, agile feel. For those seeking comfort for daily commutes, city exploration, or prolonged periods on their feet, CloudTec offers a supportive and responsive experience.
Is CloudTec waterproof?
The CloudTec pods themselves are not inherently waterproof, as they are hollow structures designed for compression and rebound. However, On Running offers a range of waterproof footwear that integrates CloudTec cushioning with a protective membrane. Models like the Cloudrock Waterproof or Cloudhorizon Waterproof feature a waterproof and breathable membrane, typically applied to the upper of the shoe, to keep feet dry in wet conditions. It is important to differentiate between the cushioning technology and the shoe's overall construction; a shoe with CloudTec is not automatically waterproof unless explicitly stated and designed with a waterproof upper.
CloudTec vs HOKA: honest comparison
Both CloudTec and HOKA are prominent in the maximalist cushioning segment, yet they approach it with distinct philosophies. CloudTec, with its individual pod-based system, offers a distributed and adaptive cushioning experience. The sensation is often described as responsive and agile, with a clear transition from soft landing to firm push-off. HOKA, by contrast, typically employs a single, thick block of soft foam for its midsole, prioritising a plush, pillowy feel throughout the stride. HOKA's maximalist approach often results in a softer, more protective ride, while CloudTec aims for a balance of cushioning and ground feel. For runners who prefer a highly cushioned yet responsive and somewhat firmer feel, CloudTec may be preferred. Those who prioritise ultimate softness and protection over ground feel might lean towards HOKA.
CloudTec care and longevity
To maintain CloudTec footwear, regular care is advised. Due to the open structure of the cloud elements, small stones or debris can occasionally become lodged between the pods. These can typically be dislodged with a key or a flat, non-abrasive tool. For cleaning the upper, hand washing with mild soap and cold water is recommended, avoiding harsh chemicals or machine washing. Always air dry shoes away from direct heat sources. In terms of longevity, CloudTec shoes, like most running footwear, have a typical lifespan of approximately 500-800 kilometres (300-500 miles) before the cushioning properties begin to degrade significantly. This degradation manifests as the cloud elements permanently compressing, leading to reduced cushioning and responsiveness. Regularly assessing the feel of the shoe and checking for signs of excessive wear will indicate when it is time for retirement.
