bluesign Certification Explained

The Swiss system that manages textile sustainability from raw input to finished product.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: bluesign is an independent certification system for the textile industry that ensures materials and manufacturing processes meet strict environmental, health and safety standards. Founded in Switzerland in 2000, it manages sustainability from production input through to the finished product rather than only testing the end result. The network covers 900 or more System Partners across 50-plus countries, its BSSL database lists more than 11,000 approved chemicals, and it mandates a full PFAS phase-out by January 2026.

What is bluesign certification?

bluesign is an independent certification system built specifically for the textile industry, designed to ensure that both the materials and the manufacturing processes behind a garment meet strict environmental, health and safety standards. It was founded in Switzerland in 2000. What sets it apart from many labels is its scope: rather than simply testing a finished product for harmful residues, bluesign manages sustainability all the way from the production input, the raw chemicals and fibres, through every stage of manufacturing to the finished item. The aim is to eliminate problems at the source instead of catching them at the end.

How the bluesign system works

The strength of bluesign lies in the breadth of its network and the depth of its chemical control. The system spans more than 900 System Partners across over 50 countries, covering mills, chemical suppliers and brands. At its core sits the bluesign System Substances List, or BSSL, a database of more than 11,000 approved chemicals and restricted substances that defines what may and may not be used. Certification operates on two levels: bluesign APPROVED applies to individual components such as a fabric or a chemical, while bluesign PRODUCT is reserved for finished goods made from at least 90 percent approved fabrics. Partners are reassessed every two to three years.

Why look for bluesign?

A bluesign certification tells you that a fabric was manufactured responsibly from the very beginning, with hazardous substances eliminated before production starts rather than merely tested for afterwards. On-site assessments evaluate air emissions, water discharge, occupational safety and resource efficiency, so the label reflects how a textile was actually made, not just what it contains. For outdoor and technical gear that relies on synthetic materials and waterproof coatings, bluesign offers reassurance that responsible chemical management was applied throughout the supply chain. A notable recent commitment is the bluesign mandate for a full PFAS phase-out by January 2026.
