ThermoBall Eco Explained
In brief: ThermoBall Eco is The North Face's synthetic insulation, developed with PrimaLoft, that uses small round clusters of fibre to mimic the lofty clusters of down. Those clusters trap warm air like down but keep insulating when wet and pack down small. The Eco version is made using recycled fabrics and fill, including post-consumer recycled content, making it a more sustainable take on the original ThermoBall insulation.
What is ThermoBall Eco?
ThermoBall Eco is a synthetic insulation used by The North Face, developed in partnership with the insulation specialist PrimaLoft. Where most synthetic insulation uses continuous sheets or long filaments of fibre, ThermoBall takes a different approach: it uses small, round clusters of fine synthetic fibre. These clusters are designed to behave like the natural clusters of down, springing into a lofty shape that traps warm air. The Eco in the name signals the sustainability focus of this version, which is built using recycled materials rather than virgin fibre, in line with The North Face's wider environmental commitments.
How the round clusters mimic down
The thinking behind ThermoBall is to copy what makes down so good. A down cluster is a three-dimensional ball of soft filaments that traps a large pocket of still air for very little weight. ThermoBall's small synthetic balls aim to do the same, lofting up to hold warm air close to the body and delivering warmth for low weight. Because the clusters are independent rather than joined in a continuous sheet, the insulation is highly compressible and packs down small, which makes ThermoBall jackets easy to stuff into a bag. It is this cluster structure, mimicking down rather than traditional sheet insulation, that gives ThermoBall its packability and soft, lofty feel.
Warmth when wet
A major reason to choose a down-mimicking synthetic like ThermoBall over real down is wet-weather performance. Natural down collapses and loses its warmth when soaked, and dries slowly. ThermoBall's synthetic clusters absorb very little water, so the insulation keeps a large share of its warmth even when damp and dries far quicker. For the British climate, with its frequent drizzle and damp cold, that reliability is a real advantage. You get much of the lofty, packable feel of a down jacket, but without the worry that a downpour will leave you cold, which makes ThermoBall a sensible everyday choice for changeable conditions.
What makes it Eco
The Eco version of ThermoBall is defined by its use of recycled materials. The North Face builds these garments using recycled fabrics for the shell and lining, and recycled fill for the insulation, including post-consumer recycled content, which means material recovered from products that have already been used rather than made from virgin fibre. This reduces reliance on new raw materials and is part of the brand's broader push to lower the environmental impact of its products. For shoppers who want a warm, packable, weather-resistant jacket but also care about sustainability, ThermoBall Eco is designed to tick both boxes.
