Selvedge Denim Explained
In brief: Selvedge denim, from self-edge, is woven on shuttle looms that produce a clean, self-finished edge with a coloured ID thread, traditionally red. Shuttle looms run slowly, around 150 to 200 picks per minute, on narrow 28 to 30 inch fabric, which uses more cloth per garment and creates the slubby character selvedge is known for. You can spot it by rolling the cuff to reveal the bound edge.
What is selvedge denim?
Selvedge denim takes its name from self-edge, a reference to the clean, self-finished edge created when denim is woven on a shuttle loom. The shuttle carries a single continuous weft yarn back and forth across the warp, which binds the edge of the fabric so it cannot fray, with no overlocking required. A coloured identification thread runs along that edge, traditionally red for Levi's, but also blue, green or gold depending on the mill. Shuttle looms are slow, working at roughly 150 to 200 picks per minute against more than 1,000 on a modern loom, and they weave a narrow cloth of about 28 to 30 inches.
How can you identify selvedge denim?
The simplest test is to roll up the cuff. On selvedge denim the outseam shows a clean, bound edge with a coloured ID thread running along it, rather than an overlocked or raw edge. That self-finished edge is the defining characteristic, created by the continuous weft yarn binding the fabric edge as it is woven. It is one of the easiest quality cues to check in a shop or at home.
Why is selvedge denim more expensive?
Several factors stack up. Shuttle looms produce only around 5 metres of fabric per hour versus hundreds on modern projectile looms, and the narrow 28 to 30 inch width means more fabric is needed per garment. Low-tension weaving creates irregular yarn tension that produces slub texture and character absent from mass-produced denim, while the tightly woven construction improves durability. Because selvedge edges remove the need for overlocking on the outseams, the internal construction is also cleaner, which you can see when the cuffs are rolled.
