Recycled Polyester Explained

Same performance as virgin polyester, made from plastic bottles and textile waste.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: Recycled polyester, often labelled rPET, is polyethylene terephthalate fibre made from post-consumer plastic bottles and textile waste rather than virgin petroleum. Roughly five plastic bottles yield enough fibre for one T-shirt. It performs identically to virgin polyester, durable, quick-drying and moisture-resistant, while using around 59 percent less energy and up to 32 percent fewer CO2 emissions to produce. Look for GRS, OEKO-TEX or REPREVE certification as proof of recycled content.

What is recycled polyester?

Recycled polyester is the same polymer as ordinary polyester, polyethylene terephthalate, but its raw material is reclaimed plastic rather than freshly drilled petroleum. Post-consumer plastic bottles and discarded textiles are cleaned, broken down and re-spun into new fibre, commonly abbreviated rPET. As a rough guide, around five plastic bottles provide enough fibre to make a single T-shirt. The finished yarn is chemically almost identical to virgin polyester, which means a recycled-polyester garment behaves the same way on the body while diverting waste that would otherwise go to landfill or the ocean.

Does recycled polyester perform as well?

Yes. Because rPET is the same base polymer as virgin polyester, it keeps the properties that make polyester so popular in performance wear: it is durable, quick-drying, moisture-resistant and resistant to UV degradation. There is no meaningful trade-off in strength or longevity for the wearer. The difference is upstream, in how the fibre is sourced, so you get the familiar hard-wearing, low-maintenance feel of polyester with a materially lower environmental footprint at the manufacturing stage.

The environmental case

The headline benefit is energy and emissions. Producing recycled polyester uses roughly 59 percent less energy and generates up to 32 percent fewer CO2 emissions than making virgin polyester, alongside reducing demand for new petroleum and keeping plastic out of waste streams. To verify genuine recycled content rather than marketing claims, look for recognised certifications: GRS, the Global Recycled Standard, traces recycled input through the supply chain, OEKO-TEX confirms the fabric is tested for harmful substances, and REPREVE provides branded traceability for its recycled fibre.
