RDS Certified Down Explained

The standard that verifies down is sourced without live-plucking or force-feeding.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) is an independent certification ensuring the ethical sourcing and humane treatment of ducks and geese in down production. Developed by The North Face in partnership with Textile Exchange in 2014, it prohibits live-plucking and force-feeding and is based on the Five Freedoms of animal welfare. A chain of custody tracks down from farm through processing to finished product, and each RDS product carries a lot number for verification. The North Face has used 100 percent RDS-certified down since 2016.

What is RDS certified down?

The Responsible Down Standard, or RDS, is an independent certification that ensures the ethical sourcing and humane treatment of ducks and geese in down production. It was developed by The North Face in partnership with Textile Exchange in 2014, bringing a respected outdoor brand together with a non-profit that specialises in material standards. The standard exists to address the two practices most associated with cruelty in the down industry: it prohibits both live-plucking, the removal of feathers from living birds, and force-feeding. The whole framework is built on the Five Freedoms of animal welfare, the long-established principles that underpin humane treatment.

How RDS verification works

RDS is built around traceability. A chain of custody tracks the down from the farm, through processing, all the way to the finished product, so that certified down cannot be mixed with unverified material along the way. Each RDS product carries a lot number, which means the down in a specific jacket can be traced and verified rather than simply trusted. One important limitation is worth understanding: recycled down cannot be RDS-certified, because its original sourcing is unknown and therefore cannot be audited against the standard. RDS applies to virgin down whose journey can be followed from the start.

Should you look for RDS on down products?

Yes, if ethical sourcing matters to you. RDS certification means that independent third-party audits have verified the down in your jacket was sourced without live-plucking or force-feeding. Without RDS or an equivalent certification, the sourcing practices behind a down product are essentially unverifiable, resting on the manufacturer's word alone. The standard has real traction among serious outdoor brands: The North Face, which co-created RDS, has used 100 percent RDS-certified down since 2016. For a down jacket, where the fill is the heart of the product, that kind of independent verification turns an ethical claim into something you can actually check.
