Edge Paint Explained

The painted, sealed finish on the cut edges of fine leather goods.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: Edge paint is the coloured, sealed coating applied to the raw cut edges of leather on bags, straps and small leather goods. Built up in layers and smoothed between coats, it protects the exposed edge from fraying and moisture and gives a clean, finished line. Neat, even, unbroken edge paint is a recognised mark of careful leather craftsmanship, while cracked or peeling edges signal wear or lower quality.

What is edge paint?

When leather is cut, it leaves a raw edge where the fibres of the hide are exposed. Edge paint is a coloured finishing coating applied to that edge to seal and protect it and to give a clean, deliberate line. It is typically built up in several thin layers, with the edge sanded and burnished smooth between coats, so the finished result is a hard, even, slightly raised bead of colour running along every cut edge of a strap, flap or panel. The colour may match the leather or contrast with it as a design choice. Done well, edge paint turns a rough cut into one of the most refined details on a piece of leather goods.

Edge paint versus turned and folded edges

Edge paint is one of two main ways to finish a leather edge; the other is to turn or fold the leather over and stitch it, hiding the raw edge inside. Painted edges give a sleek, modern, streamlined look and allow thinner, flatter construction, which is why many contemporary designer bags use them. Turned edges give a softer, more traditional finish. Neither is automatically better, but a painted edge is exacting to do well: it demands clean cutting, careful layering and patient burnishing. That is exactly why edge paint is such a useful quality tell. A crisp, smooth, unbroken painted edge reflects real skill and time, while a lumpy, thin or already-cracking edge reveals a rushed or cheaper job.

How edge paint wears and how to care for it

Edge paint takes the brunt of everyday use, because edges rub against clothing, surfaces and hands constantly. Over years, even good edge paint can begin to wear, chip or crack, particularly on high-flex areas like the fold of a strap or the corners of a flap. This is normal wear, and on fine pieces the edges can often be professionally cleaned up and repainted to restore them. To prolong the finish, avoid sharp abrasion and excess moisture, and keep the leather conditioned so the edges flex rather than crack. When buying, run a finger along the edges: they should feel smooth, hard and continuous, with no gaps, bubbling or flaking, which is a good sign of a carefully finished bag.
