Where is Salomon from?
Salomon was founded in 1947 in Annecy, in the French Alps, by Georges Salomon. The brand began manufacturing ski bindings and edges before expanding into ski boots, footwear and apparel. The Annecy Design Centre remains the hub for product development, with manufacturing spread across Europe and Asia. Salomon is now part of Amer Sports alongside Arc'teryx and Peak Performance.
What is Contagrip® and why does it matter?
Contagrip® is Salomon's proprietary rubber outsole system. Unlike generic rubber compounds, Contagrip® comes in terrain-specific variants: MA for mixed surfaces, Mud for soft and boggy ground (deep chevron lugs inspired by motocross tyres), and TA for technical alpine rock. The variation means you get genuine grip performance matched to actual terrain rather than a one-size compromise.
Are Salomon trainers good for UK conditions year-round?
Yes. GORE-TEX® lined models are fully waterproof and handle persistent British rain without issue — the XT-6 GTX is a particularly strong year-round urban choice. Non-GTX models suit drier conditions and warmer months. Trail-specific models with Contagrip® Mud outsoles are designed specifically for the wet, soft ground common across UK walking terrain.
Do Salomon trainers run true to size?
Trail and performance running models run slightly snug to provide foot containment during active use — many runners prefer to size up 0.5. Lifestyle and fashion models (XT-6, XT-4) run true to size. A useful test: stand on a stair edge and lower your heel slightly — if you feel your toes pressing forward, size up 0.5 for the trail models.
