Men's On Running Trainers
On Running trainers are built around CloudTec® cushioning and SpeedBoard® energy transfer — hollow pods compress on impact, a rigid plate converts force into forward motion. OD's stocks the full men's range across road, trail, and lifestyle silhouettes. On fits true to size for most models. Trail and racing shoes run slightly narrow through the midfoot; size up half if you're between sizes or have wider feet.
The range covers road-specific cushioning for tarmac and pavement, trail-ready grip for technical terrain, and lifestyle silhouettes for everyday wear. All models share the same core engineering — what changes is configuration: pod size, plate stiffness, upper materials, and outsole compound.

Core Technologies
All On trainers share three engineering systems. CloudTec® is the patented sole unit — hollow pods made from zero-gravity EVA foam that compress horizontally under load and lock together at toe-off. SpeedBoard® sits between the sole and upper — a curved thermoplastic plate that stores energy during compression and releases it during push-off. Helion™ is On's proprietary superfoam compound, an EVA-based material engineered to maintain consistent response across temperature variations.
What changes between models is configuration: pod size, pod arrangement, plate stiffness, upper materials, and outsole compound.
Road Models
Road-specific trainers prioritise cushioning density and midsole responsiveness. Larger CloudTec® pods provide deeper compression. Helion™ foam volumes are calibrated for sustained tarmac and pavement contact. SpeedBoard® plates in road models are typically full-length with moderate flex.
Uppers are engineered mesh — lightweight, open-structure fabrics designed for ventilation and shape retention. Outsoles use road-compound rubber optimised for grip on dry and wet pavement. Heel counters are structured but not reinforced.
Trail Models
Trail-specific trainers add grip and structural protection. Missiongrip™ rubber outsoles feature multi-directional lugs for traction on wet rock, loose gravel, and mud. CloudTec® pods are firmer and smaller than road equivalents — configured for stability on uneven terrain rather than maximum cushioning.
Upper construction is denser: welded overlays, reinforced toe caps, gusseted tongues to exclude debris. Heel counters are stiffer. Lacing systems include additional eyelets or lock-down straps for secure fit on technical descents.
Lifestyle Models
Lifestyle trainers retain CloudTec® and SpeedBoard® architecture in cleaner silhouettes. Pod arrangements are simplified. Upper materials range from soft knit to premium leather depending on model. Outsole compounds are softer — built for hard floors rather than high-mileage durability. Construction is lighter overall. Branding is minimal.
Materials Across the Range
Uppers are primarily engineered mesh (polyester or recycled polyester) with TPU overlays at high-stress points. Midsoles combine Helion™ foam with CloudTec® pod structures. Outsoles vary by intended surface: road-compound rubber for pavement, Missiongrip™ for trail. Exact compositions vary by model — refer to individual product pages for confirmed specifications.
Care
Remove insoles and air-dry after each wear. Clean with damp cloth and mild detergent. Never machine wash or tumble dry — heat damages foam structure and bonding adhesives. Store away from direct sunlight. Trail models benefit from periodic DWR reapplication when water beading diminishes.
