Scandinavian Sizing Explained — Slim, Stretch & Layer Allowance

By OD's Designer Clothing | Updated April 2026 | 5 min read

UBR is a Norwegian brand. Scandinavian sizing conventions differ from UK sizing, and UBR's stretch fabric construction adds another layer to the fit equation. This guide breaks down everything you need to know to order the correct size with confidence.

1 | Scandinavian Sizing: What to Know

Scandinavian brands — from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark — traditionally size on the slim side compared to UK conventions. This is partly cultural (Scandinavian fashion aesthetics favour a cleaner, more fitted silhouette) and partly practical (technical outerwear is engineered to sit closer to the body to reduce bulk).

Sizing Conventions Summary

  • Scandinavian sizing typically runs one size smaller than UK at S and M
  • The gap narrows at L and XL — often equivalent at those sizes
  • UBR's stretch fabrics make sizing more forgiving than rigid-fabric jackets
  • UBR sizes XS through XXL in most core jacket styles
  • For between-size customers: size up in standard cuts, size as measured in stretch models

The critical difference with UBR compared to other Scandinavian brands is the stretch factor. Because UBR's core fabrics — including their DELTA stretch technology — have genuine 4-way stretch, a jacket that might feel tight in a rigid fabric will move comfortably in UBR. This means sizing in UBR is more forgiving than the numbers alone suggest.

The Stretch Difference

A standard rigid-fabric jacket that feels too small across the chest is genuinely too small. A UBR jacket in the same measurement might feel snug on the hanger but move freely on the body. Measure your chest, find your size in the chart below, and trust the fabric to do its job.

Women's Size Conversion Chart

UBR Size UK Size EU Size Bust (cm) Bust (inches)
XS UK 8–10 34–36 80–84 31–33"
S UK 10–12 36–38 84–88 33–35"
M UK 12–14 38–40 88–92 35–36"

XL UK 16–18 42–44 96–100 38–39"

Which Measurement to Trust

If your UK label size and your chest measurement point to different sizes, trust the chest measurement in centimetres. The cm column is always more accurate than label-to-label conversion across different brands and countries.

3 | How to Measure for UBR

Chest Measurement (Men)

Wrap a tape measure around the fullest part of your chest — across your shoulder blades at the back, across your nipple line at the front. Keep the tape horizontal and level. Measure wearing your usual base layer — a t-shirt or light top. Record in centimetres.

Bust Measurement (Women)

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level all the way around. Measure over a standard fitted top or bra. Not a padded bra. Record in centimetres.

Tips

  • Get someone else to measure — self-measuring often gives a slightly lower reading
  • Keep the tape snug but not tight — it should sit against the body without compressing
  • Take the measurement twice if you're near a size boundary
  • If you plan to wear a thick knitwear mid-layer underneath, add 3–4cm to your chest measurement before checking the chart

4 | Stretch Fabrics & How They Affect Fit

UBR's use of stretch fabrics — particularly their proprietary DELTA construction — changes the fit equation compared to rigid outerwear brands. Here's what that means practically.

Movement Fit vs Static Fit

A UBR jacket may feel slightly snug when standing still. When you move — reaching up, walking, cycling — the stretch fabric moves with you without pulling or restricting. This is by design. Don't judge the fit only while standing in front of a mirror.

More Forgiving Across Sizes

The 4-way stretch means a UBR jacket can comfortably span a wider chest measurement range than a rigid jacket. If you're at the top end of a size range, the stretch will accommodate you — unlike a rigid jacket which would be genuinely too tight.

Layer Allowance

UBR jackets are designed to accommodate a base layer and a light mid-layer. If you plan to wear a chunky knitwear or thick fleece underneath, size up one. For a t-shirt or light jumper, your measured size is correct.

Body-Mapped Construction

UBR uses body-mapped panels in some models — different stretch levels in different parts of the jacket to match how the body moves. This means the jacket will feel different at the chest vs the shoulders vs the arms. That variation is intentional engineering, not a fit problem.

The Fit Checklist

  • Shoulders sit naturally — not pulling forward, not hanging off
  • You can raise both arms above your head without the hem riding up more than 3cm
  • There is no visible pulling across the chest when arms are at your sides
  • The cuffs sit at your wrist when arms are extended forward
  • Zip closes without pulling or bunching

5 | Frequently Asked Questions

Does UBR run small?

UBR uses Scandinavian sizing conventions, which tend to run slim compared to UK sizing — particularly at S and M. However, UBR's stretch fabrics compensate significantly. We recommend measuring your chest in centimetres and using the chart above rather than assuming your UK label size will translate directly. At L and XL, UBR sizing is broadly equivalent to UK sizing.

Should I size up in UBR?

If you are at the very top of a size range, or if you plan to layer heavily underneath, yes — size up. If you are mid-range in your measurements and wearing light layers, your measured size will work. The stretch fabric means UBR is more forgiving than most outerwear at the same price point — a slightly snug fit will still move well once on.

Can I try UBR jackets in store at OD's?

Yes. OD's Designer Clothing stocks UBR in-store at 44 Barrow Street, St Helens, WA10 1RY. We strongly recommend trying before purchasing at this price point. Our team can advise on size, fit, and which UBR model is right for how you plan to use the jacket. Open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm.

What is UBR DELTA fabric?

DELTA is UBR's proprietary stretch fabric technology — a 4-way stretch construction that provides wind resistance, water repellency, and warmth while moving freely with the body. It is the core technology in UBR's main jacket range and the primary reason UBR sizing is more forgiving than rigid-fabric outerwear at the same price point.
