Magnetic Snap Explained

The hidden magnetic closure that fastens a bag with a tap.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: A magnetic snap is a two-part closure that holds a bag shut by magnetism: a magnet on one side meets a metal plate or second magnet on the other, snapping together when brought close. Quick, quiet and often concealed inside the lining, it offers easy one-handed opening and a clean look. It is convenient rather than highly secure, so it suits casual and everyday bags.

What is a magnetic snap?

A magnetic snap is a fastening that uses magnetism to keep a bag closed. It comes in two parts, set into either side of the opening or the flap: one part contains a magnet, the other a steel plate or a matching magnet. When you bring the two halves close, they pull together and snap shut with a soft click; to open the bag you simply pull them apart. Because the closure works by attraction rather than a mechanism, it is fast and effortless to use, often one-handed, and it can be hidden inside the leather or lining so that nothing interrupts the clean lines of the bag from the outside.

Magnetic snap versus other closures

The magnetic snap trades security for convenience. It opens and closes faster than a zip, a turn-lock or a buckle, and it leaves the exterior uncluttered, which is why it is popular on totes, soft flaps and everyday bags. The downside is that it offers only light security: a determined pull opens it, and a very full bag can push it apart, so it is not the closure to rely on in a crowded place or for valuables. For that reason many bags pair a magnetic snap with another layer, such as a zip beneath the flap, getting the easy everyday access of the magnet plus a more secure option when needed.

Where magnetic snaps are used

You will find magnetic snaps most often on bags that prize easy access and a smooth silhouette over maximum security: open totes, soft shoulder bags, flap closures and the inner pockets of larger bags. A good magnetic snap holds reliably without being a struggle to part, and it stays put through years of daily use; a weak one can lose its grip and let the flap gape. Because the hardware is usually concealed, its quality is judged by feel rather than looks, so it is worth opening and closing a bag a few times to check the snap engages cleanly and holds with a confident, even pull.
