eVent Explained

The direct-venting waterproof membrane that breathes through its pores.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: eVent is a waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane based on microporous expanded PTFE. Its signature is direct venting: sweat vapour passes straight out through the membrane's pores rather than having to pass through a hydrophilic coating first, which many wearers find breathes faster. eVent is now owned by Performax Pro Ltd of Hong Kong.

What eVent is

eVent is a waterproof-breathable membrane that competes directly with Gore-Tex, built on the same basic material, microporous expanded PTFE, but with a different approach to moving moisture. Like Gore-Tex it is bonded into jackets, gloves and footwear to keep liquid water out while letting sweat vapour escape. Its reputation among keen outdoor users rests on how quickly it breathes.

Direct venting, the key idea

The big technical difference is how each membrane handles oil and sweat. Bare ePTFE can be contaminated by skin oils, sweat salts and dirt, which is why most ePTFE membranes are protected by a continuous hydrophilic coating; moisture then has to dissolve into and diffuse through that coating before it escapes. eVent instead treats the pores themselves with an oil-repelling protection, so the pores can stay open and vent sweat vapour straight through the membrane. The brand calls this direct venting, and it is the source of eVent's reputation for fast, immediate breathability, especially during stop-start effort.

The practical upside is that an eVent shell can start dumping vapour as soon as you heat up, rather than needing humidity to build first. The historical trade-off was that direct-vent membranes could be more sensitive to dirt, making regular cleaning more important to keep the open pores working.

Who makes eVent now

eVent has changed hands over its life. The technology was developed within the membrane maker BHA Technologies, later sat under General Electric, and the eVent brand has since moved to Performax Pro Ltd, a Hong Kong company, which has held it since around June 2020. If you read older articles you may see eVent attributed to GE or to its earlier owners; the current custodian of the brand is Performax.

How eVent compares

In broad terms eVent and Gore-Tex offer similar waterproofing; the debate is about breathability and feel. Fans of eVent value the immediate, airflow-led breathing of direct venting. Gore-Tex counters with its guarantee, its very wide range of laminates, and the durability of its protected-membrane approach. Neither is simply better; they are tuned differently, and the right one depends on how hard you work and how much you value instant breathability versus an all-round, heavily backed system.

Caring for eVent

Because direct venting relies on open pores, keeping an eVent garment clean matters even more than usual. Wash it when it gets dirty, re-proof the outer DWR when water stops beading, and reactivate with gentle heat. Clean pores breathe; clogged ones do not, so regular care is the way to keep eVent performing the way it is meant to.

eVent at OD's Designer Clothing

eVent appeals to wearers who prize fast breathability during active use. If you are weighing an eVent piece against Gore-Tex or a brand membrane, the team can talk through the direct-vent trade-off so you choose the shell that fits your pace and your weather.
