How to Clean & Store Vegan Leather

By OD's Designer Clothing | Updated July 2026

Polyurethane (PU) vegan leather doesn't behave like genuine leather — it's a non-porous surface that can't absorb oils, creams or moisture, which actually makes it one of the easier materials to keep looking new. This guide sets out exactly how to clean, store and maintain a Gabriella G bag, taken directly from the brand's own care protocol: routine cleaning, hardware care, storage and what to avoid completely.

Gabriella G Firenze is an independent Italian brand (LAGUCCI 1973 SRL, Prato) with no affiliation to, endorsement from, or connection with Guccio Gucci S.p.A. or Kering.

1 | Why PU Care Is Different

PU vegan leather is a non-porous, coated surface — it can't absorb liquids, oils or creams the way genuine leather does. Everything that would normally soak into a leather bag (rain, hand cream, spilled coffee) simply sits on top of a PU one instead, which is exactly why it wipes away rather than staining or drying the material out.

That also means PU doesn't need feeding or conditioning the way leather does — there's nothing for a cream or oil to sink into. Its care routine is built around cleaning the surface and protecting the finish, not nourishing the material underneath.

2 | Routine Cleaning

Wipe your bag over with a soft microfibre cloth, lightly dampened with water, after regular use — this is the only routine maintenance a Gabriella G bag needs.

For visible marks or scuffs, add a small amount of mild, neutral soap to the damp cloth and work over the mark gently. Once you're done, always wipe the area dry immediately with a second, dry cloth — don't let moisture sit on the surface, and don't leave the bag to air-dry on its own.

3 | What Never to Use

Keep These Away From Your Bag

  • Solvents, acetone or nail polish remover
  • Alcohol-based wipes or cleaners
  • Abrasive sponges or scourers
  • Leather conditioner or leather cream

Solvents, acetone, alcohol and abrasives all break down the PU coating — with repeated use they cause cracking, dulling or the surface starting to peel. It's a one-way process, so prevention is the only fix.

Leather conditioner is the counterintuitive one: because PU can't absorb it the way genuine leather does, it doesn't nourish or protect anything. It just sits on the surface as a sticky film that attracts dust and grime rather than keeping the bag supple.

4 | Hardware Care

The gold-tone hardware on every Gabriella G bag is lacquered alloy, electroplated and finished with a protective coating — that lacquer is what keeps the tone even, so it needs a gentler routine than the bag body.

Wipe hardware with a dry cotton cloth after rain, humid weather, or contact with skin oils and perfume — these are the main causes of dulling over time. Don't use metal polish or jewellery-cleaning products; they strip the lacquer rather than protecting it.

If a zip starts to stick or feels less smooth than usual, run a paraffin wax pencil lightly along the zip teeth. This is the fix recommended in the brand's own care notes and takes the resistance straight out of the zip action.

5 | Interior Care

Empty your bag out regularly and give it a shake upside down to clear crumbs, dust and general debris before it builds up.

For the lining itself, a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest suction setting lifts dust and loose debris without straining the stitching or seams. This is especially worth doing before you put a bag away in storage for any length of time.

6 | Storage

Between Wears

Stuff the bag loosely with acid-free tissue paper to help it hold its shape, then store it upright — ideally in the dust bag supplied with every model. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators and other heat sources, and out of humid spots such as bathrooms or damp cupboards. Heat and damp are the two biggest threats to PU over time, more so than everyday wear.

7 | Rain & Daily Wear

PU is naturally water-resistant, one of its practical advantages over untreated leather for a bag you carry every day.

If you're caught in the rain, simply wipe the bag dry with a soft cloth as soon as you can — don't leave it to air-dry with moisture sitting on the surface. The finish is also scratch-resistant, so day-to-day handling, keys in the same compartment, and general use won't mark it the way softer, untreated leathers can.

9 | Gabriella G Bag Care FAQs

How do I clean my Gabriella G bag?

Wipe it over with a soft microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water. For visible marks, add a little mild neutral soap to the damp cloth, work gently over the mark, then wipe dry immediately with a second, dry cloth.

Can I use leather conditioner on it?

No. PU vegan leather is non-porous and can't absorb conditioner the way genuine leather does. Instead of nourishing the material, it sits on the surface as a sticky film that attracts dust and grime.

Is it waterproof?

It's water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. If the bag gets caught in the rain, wipe it dry with a soft cloth as soon as you can rather than leaving moisture to sit on the surface.

How should I store it?

Stuff it loosely with acid-free tissue paper, store it upright in the dust bag supplied, and keep it away from direct sun, radiators and humid spots such as bathrooms or damp cupboards.

How do I fix scuffs or marks?

Use a gentle, lightly damp cloth with a touch of mild neutral soap if needed, then dry immediately. Avoid abrasive sponges, scourers or solvents — these can damage the PU surface rather than clean it.

Does the hardware tarnish?

The gold-tone hardware is lacquered alloy, so it's protected against everyday tarnishing, but the lacquer itself needs a gentle routine — dry it with a cotton cloth after rain or humidity, and avoid metal polish, which strips the lacquer rather than protecting it.
