Top Grain Leather Explained

The second-highest leather grade, sanded and corrected for a uniform finish.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: Top grain leather is the second-highest quality grade, made by splitting the top layer from a hide and sanding the surface to remove imperfections. An artificial grain is then embossed and sealed with a pigmented coating. This correction gives a uniform look and lets tanners use hides with natural blemishes. Typical thickness after splitting and sanding is 1.0 to 1.4mm. The trade-off versus full grain is reduced breathability, less patina and a shorter lifespan.

What is top grain leather?

Top grain leather is the grade that sits just below full grain in quality. It is produced by splitting the uppermost layer from a hide and then sanding the surface to remove natural marks and imperfections. After sanding, an artificial grain pattern is embossed back into the leather and the surface is sealed with a pigmented coating. The result is a smooth, uniform material that looks consistent across a whole product, which makes it a popular choice for accessories and goods where an even appearance is valued.

How it differs from full grain

The key distinction is correction. Full grain leather keeps the entire natural grain intact, blemishes and all, whereas top grain is corrected: the surface is sanded and refinished. The big practical advantage is that this allows tanners to use hides that carry natural blemishes which would be unacceptable in full grain, improving yield and lowering cost. After splitting and sanding, top grain leather is typically 1.0 to 1.4mm thick. It looks clean and uniform, but it has given up the unique character that an untouched grain carries.

The trade-offs

Correcting the surface comes at a price in performance. The pigmented finish that gives top grain its uniform look also reduces breathability compared with full grain, and because the natural grain has been sanded away, the leather develops less of the rich patina that makes full grain age so beautifully. Overall, top grain has a shorter lifespan than full grain. None of this makes it a poor material, it is still genuine, good-quality leather, but it explains why investment pieces intended to last and improve for decades are usually made from full grain instead.
