Stretch Denim Explained

Cotton denim with a touch of elastane for movement and recovery.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: Stretch denim is cotton-based denim blended with a small amount of elastane, usually 1 to 5 percent, to add give and comfort. At 1 to 2 percent elastane you get around 10 to 15 percent stretch, rising to 30 to 60 percent at 3 to 5 percent elastane. Premium versions recover 95 percent or more after stretching. Wash cool and skip fabric softener to protect the elastane.

What is stretch denim?

Stretch denim is denim built on a cotton base with a small percentage of elastane, also known as spandex or Lycra, woven in to add movement. Typical blends run from 1 to 5 percent elastane. The amount of elastane sets the stretch: around 10 to 15 percent stretch at 1 to 2 percent elastane, rising to 30 to 60 percent at 3 to 5 percent. Premium stretch denim is engineered to recover 95 percent or more of its shape after repeated extension, so it keeps a clean line rather than bagging out at the knees.

How does stretch denim work?

Elastane fibres are usually introduced in the weft yarns, the yarns that run crosswise, which gives comfortable two-way stretch around the body. Bi-stretch constructions add elastane to both the warp and the weft for four-way movement. More advanced fibres, such as Lycra T400, use a helical coil structure on a polyester base for better durability through harsh washing, and dual-core yarns combine more than one stretch technology for maximum recovery. These engineered yarns are why a good pair of stretch jeans can move with you yet snap back to shape.

How long does stretch denim last?

Elastane is the part that wears out first. As a guide, standard elastane loses around 20 to 30 percent of its elasticity after about 50 washes at 40 degrees Celsius, which is why care matters so much. Heat is the main enemy, so washing cooler and air-drying can extend that life well beyond the standard figure. Premium dual-core and coil-based fibres hold their stretch longer than basic blends.

How should you care for stretch denim?

Avoid high heat, because it degrades the elastic properties faster than anything else. Wash at a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius and avoid tumble drying on high heat. Skip fabric softener, which coats the elastane fibres and reduces their stretch capacity. Hang dry or tumble on a cool setting. Treated this way, stretch denim keeps its recovery and shape significantly longer than the 50-wash standard suggests.
