What is Zero Drop™ and why does it matter?

Zero Drop™ is Altra's term for a shoe geometry where the heel and forefoot are at exactly the same height — a drop of 0mm, versus the 8–12mm heel-to-toe drop found in most conventional running shoes. This encourages a more natural midfoot or forefoot landing, reducing the braking force associated with heel-striking and placing less stress on the knees and hips over time.

What is the FootShape™ toe box?

The FootShape™ toe box is Altra's anatomically shaped forefoot, designed to be as wide as the human foot at the toes rather than tapering to a point. This allows the toes to splay naturally during push-off, improving balance and reducing the compression that contributes to blisters, bunions, and forefoot pain in conventional shoes.

How do Altra Running shoes size?

Because of the wider FootShape™ toe box, Altra shoes tend to run wide, particularly in the forefoot. Runners with narrow feet often find they need to size down half a size for a secure fit. If you are between sizes, we recommend erring toward the smaller size for road running and the larger for trail, where thicker socks are typically worn.
