What is the difference between waterproof shell and softshell trousers?
Waterproof shell trousers use a fully waterproof membrane (GORE-TEX® or HyVent®) and are designed to go on over other layers in wet conditions — primarily a rain defence layer. Softshell trousers use stretch woven fabric with a DWR finish, offering better freedom of movement and breathability for active hiking and scrambling in mixed conditions. Shell trousers are more waterproof; softshell is more comfortable for sustained movement.
How do you use the full-length zip on waterproof trousers?
The full-length side zip allows you to put waterproof trousers on and take them off without removing your footwear — essential when conditions change on the hill. Open the zip fully, step in, pull up, and close. The zip runs from ankle to hip on each leg. Practise before you need them in bad weather.
How do I look after the waterproofing on Berghaus trousers?
Wash GORE-TEX® and HyVent® trousers with a specialist technical wash at 30°C. Tumble dry on low heat after washing to reactivate the DWR coating — this step is essential and often overlooked. If water no longer beads on the fabric surface after tumble drying, apply a DWR re-treatment spray. Never use standard detergent — it degrades both the DWR and the membrane.
Berghaus Kirkfell or Explorer cargo pants — which to pick?
Kirkfell (£40) is the everyday 6-pocket cargo — durable cotton-blend, regular fit, classic black. Explorer Pants (£45) are a stretch hiking trouser with reinforced knee panels — built for active days outdoors, slightly tapered cut. Pick Kirkfell for daily/casual wear, Explorer for hiking and trail use.
Does Berghaus make urban cargo track pants?
Yes — the Berghaus urban cargo track pant pairs cargo-pocket utility with a jogger-cut fit — relaxed through the leg, elasticated cuff. Sits at the casual end of the Berghaus trouser range, between technical hike trousers and lifestyle joggers. In stock at OD's — call 01744 730985 to check sizes.
What sizes do Berghaus men's trousers come in?
Standard waist sizing 30–38 with regular and long leg options on most styles. The Kirkfell and Skelbo run true to size; Explorer pants run slightly trim through the thigh — size up if you prefer a roomier fit. Helen at OD's (01744 730985) measures from physical stock if you want exact dimensions before ordering.
