Shorts Performance

Moisture-wicking technical fabric on a performance short

Shorts Performance

Breathability, stretch, quick-dry and sun protection explained

OD's Designer Clothing · Knowledge Hubs

Technical shorts are sold on their performance features, and the terms can blur together. This hub explains what breathability, wicking, stretch, quick-dry and weather resistance actually deliver, so you can judge a performance short on more than marketing.

Comfort and cooling

Breathability

How freely a fabric lets heat and air move away from the skin.

What it is

Breathability measures how well a short vents warm, humid air. Open weaves, knits and mesh panels all raise it.

Why it matters

A breathable short keeps you cooler and drier in heat and during exercise, the single most important summer feature.

Moisture Wicking

The fabric's ability to pull sweat off the skin to the surface to evaporate.

What it is

Wicking fabrics move moisture along the fibres to the outer face where it dries quickly, keeping skin drier.

Where it matters

Wicking is essential in running, training and swim shorts worn close to the skin during activity.

Quick Dry

How fast a fabric releases moisture and returns to dry.

What it is

Quick-dry fabrics use fine synthetic fibres and open construction so water evaporates rapidly rather than soaking in.

Why it matters

It defines swim and travel shorts, letting you move from pool to path without a heavy, damp waistband.

Movement and support

Four-Way Stretch

Fabric that stretches both ways for unrestricted movement.

What it is

Four-way stretch flexes along the length and width of the fabric, moving in every direction the body does.

Who it benefits

It benefits training, hiking and active shorts where squats, strides and climbs demand full freedom.

Compression Support

A supportive inner liner that lightly compresses the muscles.

What it is

A compression liner uses stretch fabric to hug the upper leg, offering support and reducing chafe during running.

Why it matters

It replaces separate base layers and can help perceived muscle support on longer efforts.

Lightweight Performance

Minimal fabric weight that reduces drag and cling during activity.

What it is

Lightweight performance shorts use the least fabric needed, cutting weight so the short barely registers when you move.

Where it matters

It matters most in running shorts, where a few grams and less cling translate to a freer stride.

Weather and protection

Water Repellency

A finish that makes light rain and splashes bead and roll off.

What it is

A durable water repellent (DWR) finish coats the fibres so water forms droplets rather than soaking in.

Why it matters

It keeps hiking and outdoor shorts drier in showers and river crossings, though it needs occasional reproofing.

UV Protection

A fabric rating for how much of the sun's UV it blocks.

What it is

UPF-rated fabric physically blocks ultraviolet light, with a UPF number showing how much it stops.

Where it matters

It matters for long days outdoors and on the water, adding sun protection beyond ordinary cloth.

Ventilation

Built-in airflow through vents, mesh and open construction.

What it is

Ventilation uses mesh panels, laser-cut holes and open hems to channel air across the skin and dump heat.

Why it matters

Targeted venting keeps performance shorts cool in the hardest efforts without adding weight.

Odour Resistance

Treatments that slow the bacteria that cause kit to smell.

What it is

Odour-resistant finishes or fibres limit the bacteria that break down sweat, keeping shorts fresher for longer.

Why it matters

It is valuable in training and travel shorts worn repeatedly between washes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between wicking and quick-dry?

Wicking pulls sweat off the skin to the fabric surface; quick-dry describes how fast that moisture then evaporates. Good performance shorts do both.

Do I need four-way stretch in shorts?

For training, hiking and active use, yes -- four-way stretch moves in every direction the body does. For casual chino shorts, a little two-way stretch cotton is enough.

What does UPF mean on shorts?

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rates how much of the sun's UV the fabric blocks. A higher number means more sun protection, useful for long days outdoors or on the water.
