Suede Explained

Soft napped leather buffed from the flesh side, named after Swedish gloves.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: Suede is leather with a soft, napped finish created by buffing the inner flesh side of a hide. The name comes from the French gants de Suede, meaning Swedish gloves. It is commonly made from lamb, goat, calf or pig hides and prized for its velvety texture and visible fibre structure. The trade-off is vulnerability: suede stains and water-marks more easily than smooth leather, needs suede-specific care, and benefits greatly from a protective spray applied before wear.

What is suede?

Suede is leather that has been finished on the inside rather than the outside. By buffing the inner flesh side of a hide, the surface is raised into a soft, fuzzy nap with a visible fibre structure, giving suede its characteristic velvety feel. The name derives from the French phrase gants de Suede, meaning Swedish gloves, a reference to the soft gloves that first popularised the material. Suede is commonly produced from lamb, goat, calf and pig hides, with lighter, smaller hides generally giving the finest, softest nap.

Why suede needs careful handling

The open, napped surface that makes suede so appealing also makes it delicate. Suede is far more susceptible to staining and water damage than smooth leather, because liquids and dirt penetrate the raised fibres rather than sitting on a sealed surface. Water in particular can cause permanent marking unless the suede has been pre-treated with a protective spray. For this reason suede should be cared for with specialised products only, never standard leather conditioners, which can flatten or grease the nap and ruin the texture.

How to protect suede from water

Prevention is far easier than cure with suede. Apply a suede-specific waterproof spray before the first wear, then reapply periodically, especially ahead of wet seasons, to maintain the protective barrier. If suede does get wet, allow it to dry naturally and never use direct heat, which can stiffen and distort the leather. Once dry, brush gently with a suede-specific brass or nylon brush to lift and restore the nap. That regular brushing also revives the texture after normal wear, keeping the surface looking even and fresh.
