Turn-Lock Clasp Explained

The twist-to-open metal fastening that secures a bag flap.

OD's Designer Clothing - St Helens - Updated June 2026

In brief: A turn-lock clasp is a metal closure made of two parts: a rotating bar or tab on the bag body and a plate on the flap. Turning the bar a quarter or half turn locks the flap shut or releases it. Secure, satisfying to use and often a visible design feature, the turn-lock is a hallmark of structured flap bags and a piece of hardware where finish and quality show.

What is a turn-lock clasp?

A turn-lock clasp is a two-part metal fastening used to close a bag flap. One part, a pivoting bar, toggle or tab, is fixed to the front of the bag body. The other, a plate with a slot or a corresponding fitting, sits on the underside of the flap. To close the bag you bring the flap down so the plate engages the bar, then rotate the bar a quarter or half turn so it sits across the slot and holds the flap in place. To open, you simply turn it back. The mechanism is simple, secure and pleasing to operate, and the distinct click of a good turn-lock is part of the appeal.

How a turn-lock works and why it lasts

The strength of a turn-lock is that it holds positively rather than relying on tension. Unlike a magnetic snap, which can be pulled apart, a turn-lock physically traps the flap until you rotate it free, so it keeps the bag securely shut. Because it is a moving metal part used many times a day, the quality of the casting and plating matters: a well-made turn-lock turns crisply and keeps its finish, while a cheap one can loosen, stiffen or wear through its plating. On structured flap bags and satchels the turn-lock is often a focal point of the design, so makers tend to finish it carefully to match the rest of the hardware.

The turn-lock as a design feature

Beyond its function, the turn-lock is frequently a signature detail. Its shape, whether a simple bar, a branded medallion or a sculpted toggle, sits front and centre on the flap, so it carries much of the bag's visual identity. Many heritage houses have made a particular turn-lock instantly recognisable. For the shopper, the clasp is both a practical and an aesthetic check: it should engage smoothly and hold firmly, and its finish should match the zips, feet and other hardware for a coherent look. A turn-lock that operates cleanly and looks crisp is a good sign of a carefully made bag.
