Goatskin Leather Explained

Pebbled, naturally water-resistant leather that is lighter than cowhide but tougher than lambskin.

In brief: Goatskin leather is characterised by a distinctive pebbled grain, high natural lanolin content and a tight fibre structure. Also known as Moroccan leather, it strikes an exceptional balance between softness and durability: lighter than cowhide but tougher than lambskin. Its natural water resistance, abrasion resistance and soft-from-new feel make it a favourite for premium leather jackets, including military flight jackets.

What is goatskin leather?

Goatskin leather is made from the hide of goats and is instantly recognisable by its pebbled grain texture. Sometimes called Moroccan leather, it has a high natural lanolin content and a dense, tight fibre structure. That combination gives it an unusual balance of properties: it is lighter and more supple than cowhide, yet noticeably tougher and more hard-wearing than soft lambskin. For garments that need to feel refined but survive real use, goatskin is a natural fit.

Why goatskin suits leather jackets

Several traits make goatskin ideal for outerwear. The lanolin in the hide provides natural water resistance without any added treatment, so the leather sheds light moisture on its own. It is soft from the first wear, meaning there is no lengthy break-in period before a jacket becomes comfortable. The dense fibre structure resists abrasion without carrying the weight of cowhide, and the leather ages beautifully, developing character over time rather than simply wearing out.

Tanning and patina

The best goatskin results often come from combination tanning, which uses both vegetable and chrome methods to balance durability with a good hand feel. As it is worn, goatskin develops an attractive patina, a softening and deepening of the surface that records the life of the garment. This is one of the reasons leather enthusiasts value it: the material does not stay static but improves with age.
