In brief: Down is the soft, fluffy layer found beneath the outer feathers of ducks and geese. Because each cluster traps a large volume of still air for very little weight, down is the warmest insulation per gram you can buy. Its quality is measured by fill power (loft) and the garment's warmth by fill weight (how much down is inside). Down excels in cold, dry conditions but loses loft when wet unless treated with a hydrophobic finish.

What is down insulation?

Down is the fine, three-dimensional cluster of filaments that grows close to the skin of ducks and geese, sitting underneath the tougher outer feathers. Unlike a flat feather, a down cluster has no central quill; instead, hundreds of soft filaments radiate out from a central point, creating a structure that traps a large pocket of still air. Still air is one of the best natural insulators there is, so when thousands of these clusters are packed into a jacket or gilet they form a lightweight, highly compressible barrier that holds onto body heat. This is why down has been the benchmark for cold-weather insulation for decades: no synthetic fibre has yet matched its warmth-to-weight ratio. Down is most commonly sourced as a by-product of the food industry, and responsibly produced garments carry certification to confirm the birds were not live-plucked or force-fed.

How down keeps you warm

Down works by loft. When a down cluster is allowed to expand fully, it springs into a tangle of filaments that trap air and resist the movement of heat away from the body. The more a given weight of down can expand, the more air it traps, and the warmer it is for its weight. A premium down jacket can therefore be far warmer than a heavier synthetic one while packing down to a fraction of the size. Because the insulation is the trapped air rather than the down itself, keeping the clusters dry and lofted is everything. Compress the down, soak it, or let body oils mat it together, and the air pockets collapse, which is why care and storage matter so much with down garments. The outer shell fabric and the baffle construction, the stitched chambers that stop the down migrating, both play a part in how evenly that warmth is delivered.

Fill power: what the number means

Fill power is the single most important number on a down garment, and the most misunderstood. It measures the quality, or loft, of the down, not the quantity. Specifically, it is the number of cubic inches that one ounce of down expands to fill under controlled laboratory conditions. A higher number means each gram of down traps more air, so the garment is warmer for its weight and packs down smaller. It does not, on its own, tell you how warm the jacket is, because a thin layer of high fill-power down can be cooler than a thick layer of cheaper down. Read fill power as a measure of efficiency and quality, then look at fill weight to judge total warmth.

Fill power vs fill weight

These two terms are constantly confused, so it is worth separating them clearly. Fill power is the quality of the down, expressed as loft per ounce. Fill weight is the quantity, the actual mass of down stuffed into the garment, usually given in grams. Total warmth comes from combining the two: high fill power plus a generous fill weight gives a genuinely warm jacket, while high fill power with a low fill weight gives a light, packable layer that is warm for its weight but not necessarily warm in absolute terms. When comparing two jackets, a 600 fill-power coat with 250g of down can easily be warmer than an 800 fill-power coat with only 90g of down. If a brand quotes only fill power and hides the fill weight, treat the warmth claim with caution.

Down vs synthetic insulation

The down-versus-synthetic debate comes down to conditions and priorities. Down offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio, superb compressibility, and a long lifespan if cared for, making it ideal for cold, dry weather and for anyone who wants maximum warmth with minimum bulk. Its weakness is moisture: traditional down loses most of its loft, and therefore its warmth, when it gets wet, and it dries slowly. Synthetic insulation, made from fine polyester filaments engineered to mimic down clusters, is cheaper, continues to insulate when damp, dries quickly, and is fully hypoallergenic. The trade-off is that it is heavier, bulkier, and tends to lose loft faster over years of compression. Many modern jackets now use hydrophobic, or water-resistant, down, where each cluster is treated to resist moisture, narrowing the gap and giving much of down's warmth with improved wet-weather performance.

Is down good for British weather?

Down can be an excellent choice for the British climate, with one important caveat: damp. On a crisp, cold, dry winter day, down is unbeatable, delivering serious warmth with very little weight. In the persistent drizzle and damp cold that defines much of a UK winter, untreated down can struggle, because once moisture works into the clusters the loft collapses and warmth drops away. The practical answer for British conditions is twofold. First, look for down treated with a hydrophobic finish, which shrugs off light rain and damp far better than traditional down. Second, pay attention to the shell fabric: a tightly woven or DWR-treated outer keeps surface moisture away from the down in the first place. A well-made hydrophobic down jacket with a weatherproof shell handles a British winter comfortably, while a cheap untreated one is best kept for dry, frosty days or worn under a hard shell.

Down care and longevity

Cared for properly, a good down jacket can last well over a decade, and care is largely about protecting loft. Store down loosely, never compressed for long periods, ideally hung up or kept in a large breathable bag rather than stuffed in its own stuff sack between seasons. Wash sparingly and only when needed, using a specialist down wash rather than ordinary detergent, which strips the natural oils and any hydrophobic treatment. The crucial step is drying: tumble dry on low heat with a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls, which break up the clumps and restore the loft as the down dries. Skipping the dryer leaves the down matted and flat. Spot-clean cuffs and collars where body oils build up, and re-proof the shell with a wash-in or spray DWR when water stops beading on the surface. Done right, this routine keeps a down garment lofting like new for years.
