Nubuck Explained
In brief: Nubuck is top-grain leather sanded on the outer grain side to create a soft, velvety nap. Unlike suede, which is buffed on the flesh side, nubuck uses the stronger outer surface, producing a finer, shorter nap with greater durability. It is susceptible to staining and water marking, so it needs a protective spray and nubuck-specific care products rather than standard leather conditioners.
What is nubuck?
Nubuck is top-grain leather that has been sanded on its outer grain side to create a soft, velvety nap. That sanding is what gives it its characteristic touch, somewhere between smooth leather and suede. The key distinction is which side of the hide is used. Nubuck works the stronger outer surface of the leather, whereas suede is buffed on the softer flesh side underneath.
Nubuck versus suede
Because nubuck uses the dense outer grain layer, it is stronger than suede, which relies on the looser fibres of the flesh side. The nap on nubuck is also finer and shorter, which makes it more durable than suede's longer fibres and gives it a more refined appearance. If you like the velvety look of suede but want something that holds up better, nubuck is the harder-wearing choice.
How to protect nubuck
Nubuck's main weakness is that it is susceptible to staining and water marking, so care matters. Apply a nubuck-specific protective spray before first wear. Clean it with a nubuck brush, using brass or nylon bristles, to restore the nap direction, and use a nubuck eraser for stains. Never use standard leather conditioners, as they flatten the nap permanently. Store nubuck away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
