What is DryVent™ and how does it compare to GORE-TEX®?
DryVent™ is The North Face's own waterproof-breathable membrane, used across most of their jacket range. It comes in 2L, 2.5L and 3L constructions — heavier builds add a drop liner for improved breathability during sustained activity. GORE-TEX® appears on Summit Series and select technical styles for maximum performance. Both are fully seam-sealed and reliably waterproof for UK conditions.
Which insulation should I choose — down or ThermoBall™?
RDS-certified down (550–800 fill power) delivers the most warmth for its weight and compresses the smallest — ideal for dry cold. ThermoBall™ ECO synthetic maintains insulating loft when damp and dries faster after exposure to rain or snow, making it the better choice for active use in typical UK weather. For extreme cold and heavy rain combined, a waterproof shell over a down midlayer is the recommended approach.
Should I size up in a North Face jacket for layering?
Men's North Face shells are designed with a midlayer allowance — your standard size fits comfortably over a fleece or light insulated layer. If you plan to wear the jacket mainly over a base layer or thin knitwear, sizing down gives a trimmer silhouette. Check individual product pages for fit notes specific to each style.
Mountain Athletics or Cyclone — which TNF jacket to pick?
Mountain Athletics Hooded Wind Jacket (£45–£90) is the technical pick — wind-resistant breathable shell built for active outdoor use, four-way stretch. Cyclone Jacket 3 (£27) is the lightweight packable — folds into its own pocket, suits commuting and as an emergency layer. Pick MA for sustained outdoor use, Cyclone for everyday packability.
Are The North Face mens jackets waterproof?
Mountain Athletics shells are wind-resistant and water-repellent (DWR finish) but not fully waterproof. For waterproof, look at the Resolve, Antora or Dryzzle lines (DryVent™ membrane). Cyclone jackets are wind-only — no rain protection. Check each product page for the WP rating.
How does the ThermoBall™ jacket compare to down?
ThermoBall™ is The North Face's synthetic-insulation alternative to down — performs better in wet conditions (down loses loft when wet, ThermoBall™ doesn't), packs smaller, lighter, vegan-friendly. Trade-off: marginally less warmth-per-gram in dry cold conditions. Best for UK weather where damp is the bigger issue.
